Projecting September 10, 2007

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Rainmakers , 1 comment so far

It is such a hassle to organize a meeting here where I work. First I need to find a room which is available, hoping that nobody has been kiasu enough to book the entire room the whole day long, with the reason stated “Just in case I need to use it”. Then when I finally get a room, I need to book the projector. There’s only one projector for my entire department to use, and it is a VERY popular item, available on first come first serve basis. Hah…if only we could make use of the services offered by Cleveland Projector Rental, there would be no problems at all in securing the booking for a projector. Psst…I hear they even do delivery! How cool is that? :D

The roach, the roach! September 7, 2007

How to get rid of a house cockroach in 10 easy steps:

  1. Announce that you spot the cockroach crawling around on the floor. Say something like, “Cockroach!”
  2. Call out to your hubby, boyfriend, housemate, father, mother, or whoever you are living with to help you get rid of it. Skip this step if you are living alone.
(In my case, when I asked hubbs (sweetly) to help me get rid of the 6-legged creature, he mumbled something that sounded like, “You said you weren’t afraid what…” - he must have been referring to revelation that I was fearless when it came to bugs and roaches. Me and my big mouth. So much for being a damsel in distress. Bah.)
  3. Find some old newspapers. It helps if you have a stack ready somewhere in the house.
  4. Put two sheets of old newspaper aside and roll the rest of the newspaper into something resembling a bat, …. well…something you can hit with.
  5. With one quick whack, hit the cockroach in such a way as to make it giddy. Repeat a few times if cockroach is still moving happily around. If you’re in luck, the fella will be overturned, with legs sticking up.
  6. Quickly grab the 2 sheets of newspaper you put aside and wrap the cockroach up.
  7. Stuff the wrapped-up bundle into a plastic or paper bag. Secure tightly with a dead knot.
  8. Put it outside the house. DO NOT throw it in the dustbin IN your house. The little critter *might* escape.
  9. Dispose of the bag as soon as you can.
  10. Put on smug look of achievement on a job well done.

My Obsession September 7, 2007

Please don’t hate me because I have a compulsive obsession. With cleanliness, that is.

Do I have a disorder if I want to have clean hands all the time? I think hand cleanliness is crucial, especially so for my case, since I take care of a toddler. Well, not just that…I ensure my hands are clean all the time, even at work.

Can you imagine when your hands are filthy dirty, and you rush to the sink to wash your hands? You use your dirty hands to turn on the tap, squirt some soap, wash and scrub your hands clean and then rinse off the dirt. And then what do you do?

You turn off the tap, right? And the tap is DIRTY from before when you used your dirty hands to turn it on! Eeewwwww…… yes, I think about it THAT way.

And that’s the main reason why my hubby and I are considering replacing our bathroom taps with one of the modern ones, where you need only lift the tap handle to turn it on. Our kitchen tap is one of these, and it is a breeze turning it on and off, because we just need to lift it with our elbows. Taps are aplenty nowadays, both in design and functionality, but since we certainly can’t afford the luxury of one of those cool electronic sensor taps, I would certainly be more than content with the lift-with-elbow ones. :)

This is what a good glass of teh tarik looks like. Frothy on top, sweet and smooth at the bottom. It has been such a long time since I enjoyed this drink and I have just last week started getting addicted to it all over again. It goes so well with nasi kandar (seen in the background), roti pisang, roti canai, or simply on its own.

I don’t order the *kurang manis* (less sugar) version because it just doesn’t have that *kick*.

The teh tarik is the perfect drink for a weary dreary day.  But drink too much, and you’ll find yourself wide awake even in the wee hours of the morning!

What does this dream mean? September 6, 2007

I had one of those dreams again.  In it, I was transported to a land far, far away to a beautiful house by a picturesque lake. The house came with a perfectly manicured lawn that had pretty flowers of all colors, including my favorite: lilies.  A path in the garden led to one of those beautiful Conservatories which contained a vast selection of greens, that were both healthy looking and pleasing to the eye.

The house was a picture of perfection.  Of course, my dream did not depict the amount of home improvements that had been employed before the final product was produced.  I’m sure it had to be done professionally, because every single detail was given that extra special touch.

SIGH…if only my dream will become a reality….

Scrap Papers and Elements from Anita Designs

Okay, the reason I took so long to complete this tag is not because I had nothing to write. In fact, when I found out that Shooi had given me this tag homework, I was thrilled and my brain had immediately gone to work, thinking and concocting ideas on what to write and how to put my thoughts into words. No no, the reason why I took so long to complete it is because the tag required me to list 8 random facts about my Mom, but I had WAY more than eight. So I had to filter and decide what to list and what to leave out. And believe you me, it ain’t no mean feat.

(Okay, part of the reason this post got delayed was because I kept changing my mind about that scrap above… hehehe, but that’s another story la)

My Mom, The Chef
My Mom can do wonders in the kitchen. She makes the best lum mee, the best too khar chor, the best yam rolls, the best assam laksa, the best everything! And I am so proud that I have managed to learn some of her culinary skills, claypot chicken rice being one of them. I am also very blessed that she cared for me after I delivered Ethan, because I got to dig into all of Mom’s cooking all over again, which I missed tremendously since I moved to Penang. Is it any wonder why I enjoyed all my meals then and downed them all with gusto? :D

My Mom, The Traveler
She loves traveling, and is very independent and self-sufficient. In fact, she is very well-travelled and can find her way ANYWHERE. She will never get lost and is very well-versed with all the LRT routes and bus routes.

My Mom, The Sports Fan
My Mom LOVES watching sports. She especially loves tennis and badminton and can carry on an informational conversation about what has transpired in any of the tennis grand slam tournaments or badminton championships for that matter. She will also stay up till the wee hours of the morning just to watch live tennis. Oh yes, and as for football (or soccer), she supports Arsenal. Yes, she sometimes can be seen sporting the Gunners’ jersey as well.

My Mom, The Computer Literate
I am so very proud of my Mother because where so many people her age choose NOT to delve into the technical world that is today, in the name of fear of the unknown, my Mom is just the total opposite. She keeps in touch with me via IM and email, and surfs the net daily. She even checks live tennis and badminton scores on the net when there is no live telecast available on TV. And yep, if you’re wondering, she reads my blogs too :)

My Mom, The Fashionista
My Mom looks good in a cheongsam, a saree, a punjabi suit and yes, even a sarong kebaya. ’nuff said.

My Mom, The Music Lover
My Mom is a great singer, and she (like me) can sing all the songs from The Sound of Music. She can also do The King and I, My Fair Lady and even some Hindi tunes! She has a good controlled soprano voice and can handle any song with finesse.

My Mom, The Tough Lady
My Mom endured 16 hours of labor while giving birth to me. Yes, I was THAT stubborn and still am, till now. I love you, Mom!

My Mom, The Educator
My Mom was formerly a teacher by profession. In fact, she was one of the selected few who travelled to England to get her teacher training completed in Brinsford College in the good ol’ days. In Malaysia, she taught Accounts to Form 4 and Form 5 students. And when I was in school, since I was in the science stream, I was not allowed to study Accounts in school then (because it was from a different stream), so my Mom tutored me in Accounts in Forms 4 and 5. And yeah, I got an A1 in SPM :)

There, all done. I am now tagging the following people:

Theater at Home September 5, 2007

My hubby and I have not stepped into a cinema to catch a movie for such a long time! During weekends and public holidays, we go everywhere with Ethan, and since cineplexes only allow entrance to kids above the age of three, it looks like we are pretty much resigned to enjoying movies in the comfort of our home.

Not that I am complaining, you know… we could always simulate the cineplex experience by getting that big bucket of butter-laden popcorn and dimming the lights, right? After all, DVDs can be bought off the shelves easily. But one item that would absolutely be the icing on the cake would be if we got ourselves one of these Berkline home theater seating babies! Hmmm…come to think of it, why stop at one? Two of these in our home would create a dream-come-true home theater seating that would cause us to never leave our home! Remember what happened to Joey and Chandler in Friends? *grin*

May the Premier League produce more matches like these! You go Reds!

Of course, hubbs remarked that the score should have been 10-0 or something…

Merdeka! September 1, 2007

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Close to Heart & Home, Drooling & Cooking , 20comments

Malaysia celebrates its 50th year of independence today.  And we celebrated one great day away from work, sleeping in and waking up to a bright and sunny day.  Watched the Merdeka parade that was being shown live from Dataran Merdeka, then switched channels to Starworld.  Let’s face it, The Ellen Degeneres Show was way more entertaining than the Merdeka commentators drone onandon about how ‘cantik’ the floats were.  Well, at some level anyway.  (Hey, Ellen was dancing to Sexy Back, y’ know…)

Well anyway, I managed to cook lunch today.  Piping hot homecooked food.  Woohoo!  We had assam fish curry, thanks to the ingenuity of instant curry paste (which I doubt existed in Malaysia 50 years ago - yup, we’ve come a long way, baby), I whipped up a meal in no time at all.  Just add fish and lady’s fingers…..oh, and if a scrumptious lunch was not enough to celebrate Merdeka with, the 2-hour afternoon nap certainly did the trick! *wink*
