My parents are here in Penang for a short holiday and of course, also to spend some cool quality time with their grandson. Yesterday, while I was working from home, my parents were out running some errands downtown. They came back in the afternoon with some surprises for me. Cool! You know how I love surprises!
Look! Mini darling ang-koos & chneh-koos! The red ones contain grounded green pea paste whereas the green ones have coconut filling. Who’s to say good things don’t come in small packages?
My parents also tar-powed one packet of char koay teow for me which I finished in a jiffy, hence no photos lo…
Tonight, Mama prepared a splendid concoction of Ba Zhen chicken soup, with kampung chicken and all the herbs and stuff. Sorry, I don’t know the correct terms for these herbs, but they are supposed to be good for health and vitality la. I ain’t complaining cos it tastes great and I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight…
I don’t like those ang kus cheh kus. Hahahaaa. Dunno why…
Hmmm I love Chinese herbal soups! Just had it this whole day! 😀
The Giddy Tigress says: So if you get these ang koos, can pass to me ah? I love herbal soups too…makes me think of home!
i usually cook bak jan wo chicken. i must go try with one .. aiyoh, now i wanna eat the kueh la
The Giddy Tigress says: That’s the vegetarian option, yes? If you add the kampung chicken, it will make the soup sweeter lo.
The koos looked great! Never tried the green ones before though.
The soup looked very nutritious too *off to look for mummy to show the photo*
The Giddy Tigress says: You should try the green ones! They are fabulous! My Mom says they have yam-based ones too – those are purple!
luckily i’ve had my breakfast (button mushrooms + cheese omelette if you’re wondering) otherwise I’ll be drooling everywhere!
The Giddy Tigress says: Your breakfast sounds delish! I haven’t had that combo in a while now….
wah…patt chan…so long never drink liao
The Giddy Tigress says: Yum yum..
Oh, I want some ang ku and cheh ku now! It’s hard to find really good ones with thin skin and yummy filling that’s not too dry. Most of it is either or, if you know what I mean.
The Giddy Tigress says: The ones I had here are the perfect angkoos…when you visit Penang, I should remember to get you some, if you are a fan!
I haven’t had an ang koo koo for yonks! I do miss them, and the red eggs, and the green kuihs and the ginger, and the kwah chi.. Hmmm…
That chickie soup looks great!
Go, Torres! Go, Stevie!! Go, Sammy!! Go, Reina!!!
The Giddy Tigress says: Another item on your to-do list come that visit to Malaysia soon? Soon??
erm.. where do u buy that angku and cheh ku?
The Giddy Tigress says: My parents bought it from Eaton in Batu Lanchang area.
I never like Ba Zhen no matter how it was cooked. However my mom always force me to drink. She said it is good for me.
The Giddy Tigress says: You know, I don’t remember liking it all that much when I was a little. But the one my Mom recently made tastes superb! Maybe my tastebuds have changed? It wasn’t as bitter as I had remembered though.
Ooooo I like your chicken soup…yummy…
The Giddy Tigress says: It tastes as good as it looks too!!
make me crave for ang ku kuey already. tomorrow must buy. we don’t have those green ones here. *sad* so fast sad over food so embarrassing hor?
The Giddy Tigress says: Buy lots and lots so you won’t be sad…
Your mom and dad are so sweet! 🙂
The Giddy Tigress says: Yes they are!
wow….the ang koo kuih looked so beautiful & tempting but but but i don’t really fancy d ‘pat chan’ lor………bitter lar, yuck !!
when my mom boiled, i run away……..haha
The Giddy Tigress says: The patchan wasn’t as bitter as I expected it to be. In fact it was rather sweet!
I’m not a fan of eating ang koo, but like looking at them 🙂 My dad will whack like nobody’s business though, even though he’s diabetic, so it’s a no-no!
The Giddy Tigress says: Oh!! Yeah, diabetics have to watch their diet and need to have discipline! I love eating angkoos once in a blue moon, not everyday!
i remember these nice ang koo (that comes in a box) from penang !!! so tasty!!
The Giddy Tigress says: Yes, there were 12 in that box, I think. All really mini angkoos!

The Giddy Tigress says: Yeah, they ROCK!
The kuehs looks so tempting! You must give me the address when I go over to Penang so I can tar pao back to Singapore. I like kuehs.
The Giddy Tigress says: No need to give you address. I can tarpow for you so you can come get them from me. I give you MY address instead (excuse to meet you in the flesh ma)

I miss home cooked food! or rather, food that I wouldn’t ordinarily cook for myself, but let mum spoil me with… heheh… what a norty girl I am.
The Giddy Tigress says: It’s inevitable I tell ya…maybe you could coax your mum to come to Sydney and cook for ya?
hmmm…..i like ang gu….
The Giddy Tigress says: Yes, me too…
Lucky lucky you! Gosh, this makes my tummy growling, esp I still haven’t had my dinner yet…
The Giddy Tigress says: Haha….all the food already gone by the time you read this! What’s for dinner?

The Giddy Tigress says: My Mom does have an angku recipe, but I need to go get the traditional angku mould first.
