Food Waste Friday: Buhbye Antioxidants :(

Today (and every Friday after this), I’m joining The Frugal Girl and other bloggers out there in posting my food waste photos within the past week, calling it Food Waste Friday.  It is hoped that by sharing pictures of the food I have wasted, it would motivate me to reduce wastage as much as possible.  I will try my very best to participate each week, and hopefully there will be weeks where I will be able to happily report that there was 0% wastage! 🙂

I cleaned out one of my shelves today, and found this box of green tea, which had expired in May.  It’s a pity, really, because there were still so many sachets left.  My husband was technically the only one who was drinking it a few months ago, and truth be said, I should have taken a few cups myself too.  Sadly, it’s all those antioxidants gone to waste now…

…unless…hmmm….does anyone know if it’s okay to steep the tea bags in hot water, and then cool it down to be used as eye masks? 😀

(gonna keep those sachets for a bit till I see if I can salvage them!!)

I’m not sure about green tea, but I never ever check dates….I think its more the freshness rather than the tea actually going bad – but again, not sure on green tea!

(I’d probably still drink it – and stuff a few sachets into his briefcase/lunchkit/pockets! LOL)

The Giddy Tigress says: Actually I did try a sachet after it had expired for a week, but could see no difference. Thanks for the tip! 🙂

I drank expired tea before. So far I am ok with it.

Actually I ate expired food that I am comfortable with. Food normally last longer than their expired date.

The Giddy Tigress says: Thanks for the *tip* Pei Sze… hehe…I think there is a difference between “Best Before” and “Expiry Date”, don’t you?

  3. Adino says:

Yeah I think tea is fine, unless you see there’s mold or something.

The Giddy Tigress says: But how to see if there’s mold, since the tea leaves are in a bag?

  4. AnneKng says:

Well, I used to put some old tea leaves in the shoe cabinets as deodoriser. 🙂

The Giddy Tigress says: Oh that’s a great idea!! Does it work though, since you said you “used to” do it?

  5. AnneKng says:

Yeah, worked for me. I put “used to” coz I throw it away already when i feel it already lost the capability of sucking up the not unpleasant smell. Lol!

The Giddy Tigress says: I see. Do you put the tea bags there, or do you scatter tea leaves from the bag? I would do the former though for very obvious reasons, but will the smell emanate from them that way?
