Get dressed … for success May 27, 2008

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Close to Heart & Home, Parenting & Motherhood, Thoughts & Scribblings , 22comments

Over the weekend, I had not one, not two, but THREE opportunities to doll myself up and look pretty. Now, this would not seem like a daunting task for some people, but for me, this task now requires some thinking and planning, since embracing motherhood means I need to factor in the inevitable need to run after Ethan, and yet look demurely sexy and charming at the same time.

How now, brown cow?

Dress-Up session #1
Friday evening, we drove to Sungai Petani for my BIL’s wedding reception - actually it was a wedding dinner that was hosted primarily by the bride’s side. I chose to wear a black figure-hugging tube dress with embroidered flower details on the top and bottom of the dress. I’ve had this dress for close to ten years, I think…so I was mighty glad I could still pull the look off. Of course, the risk that came with wearing a tube dress and caring for a mighty active toddler was that there is a high chance some things that are not to be revealed will be revealed. So to prevent that from happening, I took Susan’s advice and brought along a shawl. I made sure it was an opaque shawl, so that whenever I needed to, I just draped it over my shoulders and it certainly did its job well. I chose to wear my maroon pashmina shawl (a gift from hubbs all the way from India); the maroon shawl was to offset the black and plus, it went well with the little red flowers on my dress. The night was pretty chilly too, so the shawl was a saviour.

This is a picture taken before the dinner started, while we were hanging out at my hubby’s distant uncle’s house near the dinner venue.

Dress-Up session #2
The church wedding ceremony was on Saturday afternoon. After donning a black outfit the night before, I decided to glam it up a little for church. After all, my hubby was gonna be wearing a suit! So I wore a knee-length orange spaghetti-strap batik dress, sewn with intricate beads and sequins. I hardly wear this dress because I’m afraid that Ethan might pull out the beads or sequins, but I decided to take the risk this time round, assuming that I would not need to carry him around much anyway (hubby can do the honors  ). Now the v-neckline for this dress was a tricky one with a toddler around, so I had to add a tube top and a matching orange shawl for drama. After all, there was bound to be video and photo footage of me in this attire, what with me being one of the cantors and also there was the tea ceremony after the church wedding and all…..might as well stand out

Here’s me tickling Ethan silly before the church ceremony started. Don’t really like the angle of my face in that picture, but it does show a good view of the dress.

Dress-Up session #3
For the dinner reception at g Hotel, I decided to go grecian goddess-like, but not wearing white though. I opted for a halter straight-cut long black dress, and accessorized with a chunky purple-jaded bangle and round silver decorative dangling earrings. And since the guests had seen me in the same hairstyle over the last two sessions, I did my hair up a tad differently by putting half of it up in a simple twist-n-pin bun, decorating it simply with three floral two-legged pins, all the while praying hard it would stay up for the entire night (and it did!).

And of course, *Cinderella* must have a *Prince Charming*, yes?

Of the three outfits, I actually found the halter dress the most versatile to wear whilst caring for a toddler. I could even dance around without the need to pull here or tug there. And I even could do a nappy change in it.

Highly recommended. Think I’ll go get myself some more halter dresses. And halter tops. And halter whatevers. Plus, I love the bare-backed sexiness halters exude. Donchafinkso?

For the longest time, my husband and I have wanted to send our wedding bands to the jewelry store to have them repolished. This is not the typical cleaning that takes less than five minutes, but the repolishing process I am talking about is a thorough one where all the chips and scratches on the wedding band will be eliminated and the result is a ring that looks as good as new.

Our wedding bands are platinum ones and are finished in a matte layer. And according to the sales person in the store, this requires BOTH the wedding rings to be sent in for polishing together. The store we bought our wedding rings from offers a free one-time polishing of the rings, and we learnt that the process will take about one week. That’s not too long to wait…I know my fingers would feel naked without my wedding band on my left ring finger. And I know my engagement ring would feel lonely too.

So yesterday, we brought our rings to the store, but upon inspection of the rings, the sales person commented that our rings still look really good. She had seen much worse, and so she advised us to wait a little while longer before bringing the rings back for polishing.

Hmmm… must have been the perfectionist nature in us both that made us think that our rings need polishing. I’m not complainin’ though…

Baby, it’s good to be back May 21, 2008

I woke up really happy last Saturday morning, because my hubby was scheduled to arrive back in Penang the next day (Sunday), after a 2-week work assignment in the States. However, my joy was shortlived when I received a text message from him informing me that his United Airlines flight from Portland to LA had been delayed indefinitely, possibly causing him to miss the LAX-SIN leg of his journey and thus potentially delaying his return by a day. A WHOLE DAY, aitelyu!!! Sigh…

I quickly logged into the UA site to check the status of his flight, which was marked as “Delayed” and “Not departed”, with the reason given as “Aircraft servicing”. Well, it looked like nothing could be done, except for him to keep checking with the airlines as to what flights were available. I was glad that a few smses and a few hours later, my hubby said that he managed to get a flight out from Portland on Alaska Airways to LA, and then in LA, thankfully he also managed to obtain confirmed seats on Singapore Airlines all the way back to Penang. He would arrive a whole day later on Monday though, much to my disappointment because I was really looking forward to his return. What he experienced was really akin to what the Amazing Race contestants go through, what with the securing of seats on any available flight and all.

Anyway, Monday morning came at last and I happily drove to the airport to pick my hubby up. Both Ethan and I were delighted to see him, and Ethan immediately reached out his arms for his Daddy! :D

And besides the ton of clothes that he got for Ethan, here are the goodies hubbs brought back for moi:

Nice, or nice? Even more awesome is that hubby bought these from the state of Oregon, where he did not have to pay any sales tax!

The patchwork tote was a special request by me, because I totally fell in love with it when I saw it on the Coach site. The actual bag looks even better. I especially love the suede patches, and although it is printed with the recognizable Coach C’s all over, it’s not done in a tacky manner. I would have loved for the strap to be a tad wider though, but I suppose then it wouldn’t go with the whole tote design. Nevertheless, a very versatile, goes-with-anything-I-wear tote!

While the patchwork tote was a belated Mother’s Day present from my hubby, the other Carly Optic bag was a “gift from Ethan”. This one was a totally unexpected, because I really did not expect my hubby to get me TWO bags! He told me Ethan got me vitamins for Mommy’s Day  But anyhoo, don’t you just LURVE the optic design on the bag? It’s so different from the usual Coach signature stripe bags, ain’t it? This one has the C’s all interlocked all over the place. In any case, I am not too fussy about having my bags display the C’s for all to see, but I am okay if it is done in a tasteful manner, like the two Coaches I have now :)

And now…I need to garb myself in some gorgeous attire to flaunt the bags!

Thank you, darling…. it’s great to have you back again. MMMMMwwwwwwaaaacccksss!!!

Decision that was spot-on May 14, 2008

“Everything happens for a reason”

You know that saying? Well, I experienced it first hand today. In a way.

My parents are here in Penang for a visit; they’ve been here since Saturday. So today, they were downtown running some errands while I was at work. I told my Mom that I would pick them both up for lunch at about 12:30p.m. because I had a meeting from 11:00a.m.-12:00p.m. today. I figured I could probably get to Pulau Tikus in half an hour from my office.

Anyways, when I arrived at my meeting place at 11:00a.m., nobody was there. I waited for 10 minutes, tried calling the organizer but could not get him. I then walked out of the room and suddenly I met the organizer on the way out. Apparently he had forgotten about the meeting, so he rescheduled it to the afternoon instead.

I then called Mom to let her know that I would be able to arrive earlier, i.e. at 12:00noon instead. And when I did, I asked my parents if they wanted to eat hawker food or Fatty Loh Chicken Rice. We voted for hawker food at New World Park Hawker Center.

I ordered a big bowl of curry mee, with everything in it. For just RM3.50 per bowl, it was worth every single sen.

And do you know why going for hawker food for lunch there was the right decision today? As we took our seats, my Mom asked me to see who was seated at the next table.

YAB Lim Guan Eng, who was with three other people, had already finished his meal by the time we arrived. We approached his table, said hi and he made some small talk with us right before he left the table. Very smiley, very cheerful and of course he graciously agreed to a photo too. I’ve heard that Lim Guan Eng has been seen in various hawker centers in Penang, but I have not met him in person till today.

As he walked away, there was a group of university students (I think) who also took a photo with him, after which I heard Guan Eng telling them to “study hard ah..”.

That’s our Chief Minister right there for ya.

To me, participating in contests is highly addictive. And therapeutic too, I might add. It helps to take my mind off the stressful environment I live in, and creates an avenue for me to escape into a world with endless possibilities. Okayla. Enough of all that hooha. The bottomline is I LOVE taking part in contests, oh yes. Especially when I win stuff. And in the past month or so, I have been blessed with countless contest wins, I am pleased to say. Hubbs will gladly vouch that I will be smiling ear to ear whenever I announce my win :P

In early April, while browsing through the April edition of Malaysian Women’s Weekly in Borders, I checked out the contest winners page like I usually do, holding my breath as I skimmed the names from top to bottom. And there, printed in black and white was my name, under the Dermalogica winners’ list. At that time, I could not remember what I had won because I had entered the contest at least 2 months’ back, but when I got home, I excitedly dug out the January 2008 MWW and checked. And jumped for joy.I had won a Dermalogica The Perfect Fit gift set worth RM120 which comprises the Conditioning Body Wash, Body Hydrating Cream and Stress Relief Treatment Oil. Ooolala…I can’t wait…

I’m still waiting for the organizers to contact me pertaining to details of collecting the prize though.

And while I was still waiting, one afternoon in mid-April, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I had won the first ever lucky draw organized by the DiapersAsia forum. The prize was an adorable Starbunz cloth diaper, which of course, is for Ethan. I chose a doggy diaper for him, complete with floppy ears, which he adores to no end.

My winning streak didn’t end there. One fine morning in the last week of April, I discovered that I had won the 5th contest on Zoop’s Rantings on Life blog. My guess of £15.50 for the Calvin Klein belt was the closest to the actual price of £15.00! So I am now eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Jane Norman bag. Another bag for me! A girl can never have enough bags huh? :) I’ll definitely post pictures of the real thing when it arrives.

While surfing the net on the first Saturday night of May, I discovered that the results of the Mia Bambina Earth Day contest was announced. And to my utter joy, I found out that I had won! I really cracked my head to come up with a poem to describe the Mia Bambina logo and it actually paid off. I received my prize today, which was a package of environmentally friendly products, like so:

One Drybees Hybrids All-In-One Diaper
One Regular Organic Cotton Willowpads + hemp insert
One Organic Cotton Breast pad from Willowpads

Very very awesome indeed.

I also welcomed the month of May with another lucky draw win at the DiapersAsia forum. It’s a set of two Envirosax, environmentally-friendly shopping bags that look gorgeous! This time it wasn’t a lucky draw win per se but it was cos I referred the most people for the contest. Lawl. Just two: Rinnah & Paris. Thanks girls! The bags will be coming sometime later, because I might want to order some other stuff from the Tiny Tapir store too, the organizer of the contest. Might as well ship them together huh? I am still undecided over the designs of the Envirosax to choose though, but I have narrowed my options down to a few. Let me know which ones you think I should get, or did I miss out any other nicer ones? (all Envirosax pictures are borrowed from the Envirosax site)

Well, the prizes I have won thus far are not THAT grand. Not like that Club Med Cherating holiday for two I won back in the year 2000. But I am very grateful, nonetheless. And I am praying for more to come….hopefully? :)

A fantasy I’m dreaming of May 11, 2008

It is 8:00a.m.  I stir myself awake, still in a daze but very much aware of the clattering of cutlery in the dining area outside.  I stifle a yawn, stretch and turn over and it was then that I realize hubbs and Ethan were not in bed already.  I quickly got up, brush my teeth and wash up, and as I wipe my face dry, the aroma of freshly made pancakes and waffles greeted me.  With a smile, I waltz into my dining room, where I saw that my darling hubby had made me a breakfast fit for a queen princess!

Both the boys gave me a hug, wished me a Happy Mother’s Day and we had a terrific breakfast together.  We then got ready for church and had a really enjoyable service there.  All the mommies present were given a rose each, as a token of the celebration for Mother’s Day.

We then headed for the beach where we were gonna have a family picnic.  Hubbs had packed a basketful of goodies which included most of my favorite food items like chicken pie, cheese cake, Twisties and oh yeah, some pink guava juice too.  The weather was slightly cloudy with just the right amount of sun.  Perfect to acquire a tan. Which I took full advantage of :) After a couple of hours playing with the waves, building sandcastles and having nothing but fun, we headed for home for our afternoon siesta.

We woke up just in time for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants.  Ethan was on his bestest behavior that night, obediently sitting in his baby chair and eating all by himself.  Not a single crumb of food was dropped.  Of course, for me, margarita was part of what I ordered for dinner too! :)

And then we came back home, and got ready for bed.  I read Ethan his bedtime story, Jack and the Beanstalk, gave him a kiss and tucked him into bed.  He looked up at me, reciprocated the kiss and said, “I love you Mommy!  You’re the best Mommy ever!  Happy Mother’s Day!”

Oh yeah, and before I called it a night, hubbs gave me a massage, complete with soothing essential oils and calming music.

Bliss.

Was that good enough a fantasy, SlaveMom?

Ah well, I did go to church today though.  And although I didn’t get that rose, I got a pink carnation and a mini brocade case from Mama’s Nyonya restaurant when we dined there for lunch.  Better than nothing la.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you awesome mommies out there!  May all your wishes come true!

And a very Happy Mother’s Day to my Mama, the queen of my heart and soul!  You’re da best!  I’m so glad I get to spend Mother’s Day with you this year! *grin*  Thank you for the freshly harvested sweet sweet persimmons you brought back from Perth too!  Y-U-M!

Oh, and also a special shoutout to Adino’s wife, Poey Chin, who just qualified to celebrate her very first Mother’s Day!  Congratulations Adino and Poey Chin, on the arrival of little Rachel!

Now, since it’s already Mother’s Day today, I’m gonna twist this tag a wee bit and give a chance to the daddies instead to fantasize about Father’s Day coming up in June.  Fair, no?

Dandelion dream alphas from A work in progress

Aiyo, I missed this dateline by a week liao.  According to this meme, I am supposed to post my entry a week after being tagged on a Friday, and I was tagged by the bento-crazy DSLR-maniac Hijack Queen some 2 weeks ago!  Eeeek.  Anyway, at least I am posting this on a Friday. :)

DO YOU PREFER…

1. To watch or participate?
Lazy Smart people like me WATCH and learn, and then selectively participate.

2. Malls, catalog shopping, or the Internet?
Must I only choose ONE?  I love ALL of those options.  Don’t you know that I am a kaki shopping?  Hence, I must live up to my name la.  Seriously though, it really depends on what I am shopping for.  I’d even go to the extent of shopping in all options available, weighing the pros and cons before I land myself the perfect bargain.  That’s the kaki shopping for ya.  … and men think we women take so long to shop!

3. A bath or shower?
A shower with full blast bursts of water.  Even better if there is a massage function in the nozzle.  Works wonders on the nape of the neck, y’know.  My usual routine now is to have a cold shower every night before bed.  The cold water keeps me alert enough to have have a quick read before I hit the sack.  And my skin never felt better.

4. To talk to people by telephone, in person or by e-mail?
Email, because I get to phrase everything out the way I want it, I get to use the backspace and delete key and then I have a black and white proof of what I sent and what replies I get.  Trust me, emails have come in handy for me all the time.  The downside to this is that *sometimes* people don’t really get what you mean.  Someone called me up sometime back and asked if I was angry with regards to the email I sent out.  I told him no, but he said that I sounded angry from the email.  However, no matter how I reread my email, I just couldn’t pinpoint where he misconstrued the anger.

5. Typing or writing?
Writing by typing.

And I am tagging:

Have a good weekend y’all!  And oh yeah, here’s wishing all mommies out there a fantastic Mother’s Day this Sunday!

Blown away by the breeze May 8, 2008

Who doesn’t appreciate homecooked food?  Especially if it tastes really good and arrives like 10 minutes after the order had been placed… We recently stumbled upon a nice and cozy restaurant nestled in Aboo Sitee Lane in Penang.  Actually hubbs went there with some friends of his, and he was going on and on about how good the food was, that I simply HAD to try it out.  Oh by the way, I just found out that Aboo Sitee Lane in Hokkien means Gangsters’ Lane.

So anyway, the name of this restaurant is Nyonya Breeze and upon first glance, one might pass it off as a vegetarian restaurant, simply because of its (misleading) green and white signboard.  This picture was taken as we were leaving the place.  See the two cute guys in the doorway? *grin*

We didn’t order a lot since it was only two adults and one rice-loving kid dining.  Only four small dishes and dessert.  We ordered tau eu bak (braised pork with soya sauce), acar hu (sort of a pickled fish), jiu hu char (shredded radish, carrots, cuttlefish etc served with fresh green lettuce) and huan choo heok masak lemak (sweet potato leaves and sweet potatoes cooked in a soup mixture with TONS of santan).

I loved ALL of the food.  It was a nice authentic touch that the food was all served in those old-fashioned plates with the pink flower designs.  Actually I enjoyed the food so much that I almost did not notice that the tau eu bak did not have any eggs.  I did LOVE the masak lemak dish though.  Reminds me of the one my grandma and mother makes.  Mom calls it masak titek, which I believe is the same.  I can almost taste the flavor and aroma of the santan even as I am typing this now.  Definitely a must-order when I come back to the restaurant next time.  Not to self: get recipe from Mom.

I noticed a lot of elderly nyonya-looking folk eating at the restaurant too, which goes to show that the food must be good.  Lunch came up to RM37.75, which was very reasonable.  Of course it helped that our newly approved CIMB Platinum MasterCard qualified us for a 10% discount off the bill.

A dinner story at Friday’s May 5, 2008

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Drooling & Cooking , 16comments

When we dine out, we value exceptional service, much more so than the quality of food served.  Of course, the food needs to be definitely above average, but if we do encounter a restaurant with delicious food coupled with horrible service, or rather service that makes us, the diners, feel uncomfortable, we will not think twice about boycotting it after that.

Therefore, it goes without saying that the reason we keep coming back for more to Friday’s is the impeccable service we receive whenever we dine there.  Well, save for a few instances where we were assigned dumb not-too-smart server-challenged servers, we do walk out of the restaurant feeling good about our dining experience.  Last Thursday, Labor Day, was no exception.  We ended up having our dinner at Friday’s because our initial plan of going to Soba Yoshi backfired when we discovered Soba Yoshi decided not to labor on Labor Day :P

Here’s what we ordered at Friday’s:

(sorry, no foodie pictures this time round.  I actually THOUGHT I had an old picture of the quesadilla’s somewhere in my archives, but apparently not)

True to the exceptional service, the kids’ chicken spaghetti was served first, together with the shrimp martini, and after that the ribs came.  I had almost finished my plate of ribs, but my hubby’s chicken quesadillas had not yet arrived.

The manager at Friday’s suddenly came to our table and presented us with a bowl of mushroom soup on the house.  He did not tell us what it was for, so we thought it was to compensate the delay in the arrival of the quesadillas (or perhaps because we were regulars there *wink*).

A few minutes later and still no sign of the missing quesadillas, we asked the manager to check on the status of our order.  Then a few minutes later, our server came to our table and asked us, “You ordered just one main course, right?”

Duh. We stared at her and said, “No…. we also ordered a chicken quesadillas!”

She walked off hastily, with the manager hot on her tail, *scolding* her or something.

A while later, the server came back to our table, apologized for forgetting to include the order earlier on and reassured us that the chicken quesadillas would be arriving in about 5 minute’s time.

And that’s why, boys and girls, all servers should ALWAYS ALWAYS repeat their orders.

Anyway.

After our meal, Ethan was restless so I took him out for a walk while hubby finished his meal and paid up.  Later, my hubby told me the manager came up to him and told him the quesadillas was on the house.  However, when my hubby asked for the bill, the manager decided to charge us even LESS than what he would have charged us had he only removed the chicken quesadillas from the bill.  In the end, instead of paying RM68.65 for the stuff our meal (sans the quesadillas), we ended up paying just RM44.75 for the stuff that was supposedly complimentary.  I guess it’s just Friday’s way of recording their inventory or something.  Not complaining though.  It’s a good consolation…everyone’s happy…well, except for maybe the poor server who made the mistake though.

Now THAT is what I call SERVICE.  Making the customer happy :P

Believe me, I have dined in restaurants where even after I had complained there was a STAPLE in my son’s food, they did nothing but solemnly take the plate away with nary a single word or apology.  The nerve!

Of course, that wasn’t the only good thing that came out of our dinner that night.  We met Angie, Bart and Julian too, who were celebrating their anniversary at Friday’s.  And that encounter resulted in this very adorable family portrait, courtesy of Bart.  Thank you, it’s awesome!  We’ve not had a family picture taken for a long time now, and this was a splendid one…
