Easter with the Giddy T’s March 24, 2008

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Christianity, Close to Heart & Home, Drooling & Cooking, Thoughts & Scribblings , 11comments

This year, Easter is celebrated much earlier (March 23rd) than other years. In fact, the next time this would happen would be in the year 2228 (220 years from now) . Good Friday saw me fasting and praying for the first time in at least three years. Since I am neither pregnant nor breastfeeding this year, it was the perfect time for me to fast, pray and dedicate my thoughts solely to the day Jesus gave His life on the cross for me. Hubbs and I had planned on going to church for the service at noon, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we didn’t…and we are kicking ourselves for that because had we gone, I might have been able to post a picture of the Giddy Tigress with the newly appointed Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng. Not that we are stalking him or anything like that, though…but if I do bump into him, I would love to extend a warm hello and welcome as a friendly *neighbour*.

On Saturday, we made a day trip to Ipoh to celebrate my nephew Collin’s full moon. It was again another excuse to stuff our tummies with food. Hehe… no regrets there. In fact, we were so full after the lunch that all plans of tar-powing the famous Canning Garden chee cheong fun vanished into thin air (although the stall was only a stone’s throw away). Ah well. There’s always next time.

Then came Easter Sunday. As usual, the church was packed full to the brim with parishioners (methinks some of them were hoping that the CM would make another appearance). We had to make do with sitting on plastic chairs placed by the pews, because we were ummm….a few minutes late. Actually, it was rather a blessing in disguise because we had a full view of the altar and was able to concentrate 100% on the sermon being delivered. Well…maybe 90% because of intermittent distractions from Ethan.

It was also Race Day (Sepang Formula 1 Grand Prix) and Super Sunday (Barclays Premiers League) that day, and hubbs hinted VERY loudly that he would prefer homecooked food for dinner that night. So I bought a few items from Jusco for cooking dinner. I was only able to start cooking at 5:55p.m. though, that’s when Ethan finally fell asleep. One hour later, I managed to whip up a piping hot dinner, one which hubby gave the thumbs up to, much to my delight. *grin*

Although Race Day ended with Kimi getting what he deserved (yay!!!), I shall choose not to say anything about the Super Sunday score, which I don’t think was super at all. Bleagghhh….

I’m back from my very short two-night escapade to KL..no..more like Damansara because that’s where we were most of the time anyway.  In short, it was a very fruitful and eventful trip, the excitement of which started even before we left Penang on that Saturday morning.  My hubby noticed the air pressure in one of the rear tyres of our car was diminishing more so than the rest, and it was a good thing that he noticed a nail stuck to the tyre right before we left.  Not wanting to tempt fate, and taking this as a sign from God, we drove to the tyre shop and had it patched.  We decided to have dim sum brunch after that since we were already hungry.

Off we headed for KL after that.  Surprisingly though, Bidor still called out to us, and we simply had to stop for a quick bite there.  The lure of the Pun Chun wan ton mee was too strong, even though it is now priced at a hefty RM5.25 per plate! The quaint little town of Bidor was already decked in election posters and banners, much more so than in Penang, I would say.

This time round, hubbs and I decided to take Monday off from work, so we had more time to spend in the Klang Valley.  It was a good thing we did, because we managed to achieve a lot of things:

Alrighty now…it’s high time for me to lose weight.  Hopefully before the polling date…

I have a new title to my name now. Someone will soon be calling me “Kor kor” - Hokkien for Aunt. This morning, at 9:51a.m., a beautiful baby boy was born to my brother and his wife. All of 3.26 kilos, and every bit a bundle of immense joy, my nephew Collin said hi to the world and of course to his proud parents. See how comfy the little one looks in his crib, all warm and bundled up?

Collin decided to greet everyone a Happy Chinese New Year, and made it in time to be eligible for an angpow too. Hi Collin… Kor kor will be coming to see you soon, with an angpow, okay? :D *hugsss*

Three days before the Chinese New Year, I received the finished product of the personal project which I had been working on for months on end. Forty pages of photos of Ethan all captured in a 30cm x 30cm black hardcover-bound photobook, worth every second of the time I had spent laboring over it.

Never mind that I had to redo some of the pages over and over again because I was not completely satisfied with them initially.
Never mind that it took me weeks to finally get in touch with someone from Photobook to iron out the details of the order.
Never mind that I had to upload the photobook file at least four times because they got corrupted every time I did the upload.
Never mind that I had to follow up with Photobook to find out if my order would be able to arrive before Chinese New Year, only to find out that they had already shipped it out two days before my inquiry was made.
Never mind that I had to personally call the courier company to follow up on the status of the shipment, only to be told that they had gone to my house and claimed that no one was around. And never mind that no notice was left to inform me that they had tried to deliver the parcel.
Never mind that my hubby and I had to drive all the way to the courier company to pick up the parcel, because we were only too anxious to see the finished product.
Never mind that we had to wait a further 10-15 minutes before we finally held the parcel in our hands.

Because all this trouble was so worth it. I decided to create a photobook with Ethan’s photos after Jazzmint recommended Photobook over Pixart. At that time, my Pixart project was almost done, but I still took her word for it, and am happy to say that I have never looked back since. Compared to Pixart, I must say that the lamination quality of Photobook’s albums are way better. Just seeing the digital scrapbooking I created come to live on the pages of the photobook is really inspiring. In fact, I am seriously thinking of starting on another one for the next two years culminating with Ethan’s fourth birthday, and hubbs even suggested creating one for our wedding photos too.

Usher in the mousey year! February 6, 2008

Have you gotten everything ready for Chinese New Year yet? Got all the pongkams (mandarin oranges), cookies, pussy willows and cherry blossoms? Got all the spring cleaning done? Got all the new new red red “ong ong” clothes and underwear washed and ironed out? Heh.

Me? I’m almost there…

The rush to get all the necessary new ringgit notes has finally paid off. All the running around from bank to bank, taking numbers and waiting in line, … an annual routine task for me, I’d say… well, since I earned the right the give angpows away, that is. And finally, on Monday, I reap my harvest…Love the crisp feeling and smell of the new notes. Love how smooth they feel in my hands. Love it love it love it! Next up. Packing them into angpow packets for distribution.

Yes, Chinese New Year is definitely a time of giving and of eating. This year, we will spend our Chinese New Year reunion in Ipoh, my hometown. This is the first time I will be back in Ipoh for the reunion since I got married about three years ago. So definitely a lot of eating involved there. Looking forward to the yee sang, jiu hoo char and too thor th’ng. Very the festive indeed.

Like all previous Chinese New Years, we have also prepared New Year hampers for our parents. We also gave a similar one to Ethan’s baby sitter. Preferring instead to have our hampers consist of nutritious food items instead of sweets and candies, we got these hampers from Eu Yan Sang, nicely wrapped and delivered to our doors. Love the sparkle and joy on the faces of our parents when we present it to them. Actually I am secretly wishing someone would give one to me too… hehehe…

So, to everyone celebrating Chinese New Year, a very Keong Hee Huat Chye, Kong Hei Fatt Choy and Xing Nian Kuai Le to you. To everyone traveling home on the roads, drive safely and remember to rest if you are tired. And to everyone enjoying the holidays, have a good well-deserved rest.  Now, bring on the food!

Cleaner.. shinier… leather January 29, 2008

Today, my beloved leather sofas got a nice sprucing-up for the new year. I had been postponing this task for way too long and for the past couple of days, the task had been delayed yet again, because I couldn’t find the leather cleaning kit. It’s true!!!!!  Well, I finally found it this morning, stashed in one of the drawers under our bed and got down to cleaning the sofas. We have one 3-seater and one 2-seater, both of which are full-leathered ones. This means more time and effort will be needed to clean the sofas. Well, someone’s gotta do it…

First, I used the brush head of the vacuum cleaner and sucked up all the dust on the sofa. Of course, I had to move the sofas aside and vacuumed the floor under them. Then I used the leather soft cleaner, which was of a foamy consistency and cleaned the leather surface of the sofa in circular strokes using a sponge. I left it to dry for about 45 minutes and then applied the leather protection cream, also in circular strokes, using a clean dry cloth. I like to think of the leather protection cream as a form of moisturizer, much like the one we use on our faces. After the protective layer is applied, the sofas look shiny and so inviting to be sat on. But the instructions say to leave it to dry. So I am giving it a few hours before anyone is allowed to sit on it.

Unfortunately I totally forgot about it and sat on it momentarily before my hubby reminded me not to. :P

You know, sometimes I wished we had gotten a non-leather sofa, where we would then be able to change the covers as and when we like, but it is moments like these, when I look at and admire how clean and shiny the leather sofa is, and the comfortable feeling I get when I lie or sit down on the leather, that I have absolutely no regrets we got these leather babies.

Prosperity plants & pasta January 26, 2008

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Close to Heart & Home, Drooling & Cooking, Relax & Celebrate , 16comments

Maybe it was because I kept seeing Chinese New Year ads all over the TV.

Maybe it was because I just sent out a whole bunch of Chinese New Year cards on Friday.

Maybe it was because I felt the living room lacked some Chinese New Year “ong”.

Maybe it was because my hands were itchy.

Maybe it was all of the above reasons in one way or another, but most probably it was because we were gonna have Ethan’s early birthday lunch celebration today, so my parents are here in Penang for a visit and yeah, so are my parents-in-law. Double the stress! So what to do, what to do, what to do? I mopped the house and gave the living room a facelift lo, like any good daughter/daughter-in-law would do.

The prosperity plant we had had long since dieded… so okay, we cheated. We bought a healthy-looking one from Jaya Jusco two days ago (RM23.80), and all I had to do was just to scoop out the old soil and replanted the new prosperity plant. The ceramic pot of course remained. The plan was working flawlessly, and I beamed with pride when MIL exclaimed, “What a healthy looking prosperity plant that is!” Unfortunately, my hubby let the cat out of the bag when he retorted, “We bought it from the supermarket laaaa!” Bummer. *grumble grumble mutter mutter*

Next, the space in the living room where once the Christmas tree stood, had been empty for about 5 days now. I took the tree down on Monday and on Friday, I brought out our pussy willow stalks in a tall vase. Fine, it was last year’s but they still look good, so I thought, “Why not?” After hanging the decorations and turning the vase a few times to ensure a perfect angle on the pussy willow stalks (hubby helped a bit with the aesthetics too), I was glad. NOW, it looks like Chinese New Year… well, save for the mandarin oranges we have yet to buy though. Do you think I have got enough decorative elements on the stalks or do I need to make some more?

On a rather unrelated note, isn’t it weird why I would crave for something Italian and cheesy when it is Chinese New Year season? When I work from home, I have the luxury to experiment in the kitchen, and pasta was the main course for lunch on Friday, as I cooked up a mushroom and herb pasta dish. So yummy, so cheesy, so calorie-laden, so…. Okay, okay, so you caught me again. I had some *help* making it (of course I “kah liu” with cheddar cheese and margarine - I didn’t have butter) Still good, no? Works for an Italian-food lover like moi!

And these are the programs that I definitely have to watch each week. Other times when I mysteriously find my hand holding the TV remote, I would surf around for other  interesting programs to watch. Often I find myself lingering too long on the Asian Food Channel and realize that I had suddenly become hungry. It was through this surfing exercise that I discovered that the BBCE channel had been removed from my Astro subscription early this month. Upon closer investigation, I found out that BBCE, along with Discovery Home & Health and Discovery Real Time, among others, are in a separate mini package called the Metro Plus package. In due course, the channels under the Metro Plus package will be removed from the subscription of those who do not subscribe to them. These channels started off as free viewing channels though. SIGH…does this mean I’ll have to upgrade my package now? I love watching DH&H and would hate to have that one less channel to surf to.

So… do you think I have a TV addiction problem? My hubby thinks I do. Heh. I am trying to cut down on the amount of time I spend in front of the telly though. By doing what? Oh… cleaning, ironing, laundry, scrapbooking, blogging… hehe. It’s getting harder and harder to keep myself from watching some programs I tell ya. What with American Idol starting soon, and the second part of Heroes Season 2 too!

Hmmm…maybe one of my New Year resolutions ought to be spending less time watching TV huh?

Giddy cauldron broils over January 7, 2008

So yum. So tantalizing. So seriously non-halal. So giddy. So tau-ewe-bak (soy sauce with pork), with some fat in all the right places. So watercress soup and so nai pai chye (that’s what I know it is called). That was our lunch at home on a fine Saturday afternoon.

One of my New Year resolutions to cook more often certainly has got off to a grand start. Makes it easier when I can afford to work from home Fridays. This way, I get to do some quick marketing at the nearby mini market on Friday morning and then prepare the stuff to cook a day before Saturday. And it looks like this system is working out pretty well.

Having a homecooked meal allows us time for a lazy afternoon siesta too. But last Saturday, I had nothing of that sort. While the two boys, with their tummies satisfied and full, slept soundly, John Grisham’s The Innocent Man kept me hanging on to every word. Finished reading the spectacular book and will be embarking on another novel soon, either Picoult or Kinsella. Flip coin?

***

Oh yeah, so this brings me to the New Year Resolution tag from Wen. Yes, I do make New Year resolutions, but I’m afraid I tend to fall into the *flippant* category. But I am determined to carry them through this year… see, I am already on the right track :) I sincerely hope I can keep this up… it’s only January!

*Start Copy Here*

When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions we seem to fall into four categories: 1) quite serious about them, 2) be flippant about them, 3) do it because we feel pressured to, or 4) do not do them.

So, the purpose of this little game is to let us know which category you are in. Copy from “*Start Copy Here*” through “*End Copy Here*” and post it. Before “*End Copy Here*” tell us who you are, your site(s) (with link) and your New Year’s Resolution, or not.

Then tag as many others as you like, from one to your entire blogroll, your choice.

If you like, create an intro paragraph to your post that also acknowledges who tagged you.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:

Juliana – Juliana’s Site - My New Year’s resolutions are looking for a part time job, keep blogging, and learn to cook and bake.

Michelle - Rusin Roundup - 1. Learn to be happier and accept myself for who I am, 2. Is to lose about 25 lbs., and 3. Is to stop smoking.

Karen - Grow Rich Along With Me - My resolution for next year is to achieve $3K per month passive income by the end of 2008.

Mel - Attitude, the Ultimate Power & Complain Complain Complain - “I don’t need no stinking resolutions.” I never hold to them anyway so why frustrate myself by starting them now.

Sandee - Comedy Plus - I don’t need no stinking resolutions either. Years and years ago I did them because everyone else did, but not once did I follow through. Why set yourself up for failure?

Lynda - lynda’s loft - My resolution is to see resolve to that which needs resolution. Like Mel and Sandee, I feel that resolutions give us more stress, however, being a person who sets goals each year, isn’t that the same thing as a resolution??? Goals vs. resolutions? Goals are more general and allow for more time to complete them, a resolution requires a mind-set and immediate action, which is not always feasible… Well, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it…

Amelia - Amel’s Realm - This is a list of my New Year’s Resolution:
1. Health: Continue exercising twice a week, eat enough veggies and fruit, have enough rest, take vitamin C regularly and women’s multivitamin during my period.
2. Spiritual: Improve my Daily Bread reading routine and my prayer life and learn more from God’s Word.
3. Financial: Continue to make money online (my goal is getting €100 per month at least), be more creative in writing posts, and save most of the money.
4. General Life: Continue to learn Finnish AND practice it as best and often as I can, try out more baking and cooking recipes, continue to maintain and share positive thoughts, continue to learn to control my thoughts, continue to learn to catch myself before I start complaining and count my blessings instead, continue to stop and cherish all the little moments in life that oftentimes go unnoticed, and continue to feed my inner child and last but not least, continue to ENJOY my life thoroughly.

Trinity - Rooms of My Heart : My New Year’s resolutions in simple and fast way will be blog less and spend more time with my children and read more good books. I want to start studying about global warming and blog it…

Max - MAX - My New Year’s resolutions are to dedicate more time to my friends; to finally be able to read “Der Spiegel” in German; to be calm when organizing my marriage; to go one last time to my favourite club and dance the night away; and continue to be happy!

Eric - Speedcat Hollydale - I love chicken. Problem is that I really never get to have enough chicken! My New Year’s resolution is to enact “Chicken Tuesday”. On this day I will eat only chicken, blog about chicken, and promote chickens all over the world. (hormone free) Join me, won’t you?

Marzie - Mariuca & Mariuca’s Perfume Gallery - My resolution for 2008 is to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and to expand my Perfume Collection.

Sindi- Life Is A Roller Coaster - My resolution is to complain less, pray more and be a little more thankful for what I have.

Judy - Sugar Queen’s Dream - My New Year’s resolution is:
To take better care of my health.
To eat better, well at least 3 meals a day, I’m lucky these days if I stop for one meal a day….
To help make the world a better place to live, I love the human race, but think there’s always room for change.
To be generous until it hurts.
To live each day as if it’s my last.
To make a book of our personal family recipes and traditions for each of my 3 my children, so that the traditions and family cooking can be passed on in my family line long after I’m gone and finally…….
To help more with the local Human society, Animals like little kids can not fend for themselves so it’s up to each of us to take care of our pets and to step in and care for all animals…..
I hope that through me I can encourage my Children to be better adults and in turn to raise the Children they have or will have, to be good people with good, sound & solid values…. Peace!

Adrian - First Time Dad - My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 is to be a better father…now I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions because I never keep them but this one I better keep! Happy New Year to one and all!

Colin - Life - New Years Resolution? No way…Better to achieve more throughout the year rather than pander to the whims of a one day ‘wishful thought’

Mauro - 1 Million Love Messages - My resolution for next year are: 1. Change my job (maybe work online). I’m really unhappy in the actual one. 2. Dedicate more time to my family and girlfriend… maybe start to get ready for our wedding :-) 3. Work hard in 1 Million Love Messages and reach 2500 Love messages (or more) in the end of 2008.

MidgetManOfSteel - Mental Poo - To get out of dealing with people who I have no desire in helping at the job I’m doing…catch the eye of someone who can see that I can write and be funny…and get my own ticket to happiness from my humor….and a Ferrari. While I’m doing this, I resolve to get a Ferrari.

Stacy - My Thoughts - My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 - Is to be more understanding to my children and to other people, Not to curse at others while I am driving, try to eat right and exercise, try to volunteer in my community, and to believe more in my spiritual side.

Jason - DatCurious.com & DatMoney.com - Although, I normally don’t do New Year’s Resolutions (because I find it as an excuse to actually do something I should’ve already been doing), this year I will plan on giving back to the blogging community, especially my audience. I’m not sure how I will do it yet, but I definitely will.

Kesa - Little Aussie Cynic - My New Years Resolution is the standard….. to finally get off the smokes and to loose 8kg…. both which are possible just difficult…..Happy New Year to you and yours….Aussie

Ann - A Nice Place in the Sun - “To let the rest of my life begin as soon as possible.”

Wen - Little Paces - I want to sleep early to reduce my haggard and tired complexion. To blog better than last year and hopefully can save money from paid post so that we can immigrate to Australia. To spend more time with my children. To be able to bake.

Giddy Tiger - Giddy Tigers - I resolve to fulfill my resolutions to cook more often, to reignite my reading hobby and to spend more time with my loved ones and with God.

I’ll be home for Christmas.. December 27, 2007

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Close to Heart & Home, Memes & Tags, Relax & Celebrate , 18comments

First off, a very merry and blessed Christmas to everyone who has taken the trouble to wish me and my family good tidings for the festive season! May peace, goodwill and God’s blessings be with all of you throughout the coming New Year! And now here’s my Christmas story…

Right before I scooted off for the Christmas holidays, I received an early Christmas present in the form of a tag from Healy. Initially I had planned on getting it done before Christmas but that didn’t materialize, owing to inevitable circumstances.

The Saturday before Christmas, my brother and his wife came to Penang for a visit, so we took them to the E&O for lunch. Well well, whaddya know… they were serving fresh oysters on the buffet spread! It had been ages since I had indulged in oysters so I wolfed down half a dozen…and a couple more. But that turned out to be a disastrous decision because in the afternoon, I felt really giddy and had to take a long afternoon siesta. Woke up with a fever of 37.9°C, took two Paracetamol tablets and prayed the fever would go down down down. I was still nursing a slight cough then too, and so I proceeded to make myself a cup of warm Manuka honey with lemon.

After dinner, my head was really heavy and I went to bed as soon as I can. I felt better in the morning: fever had subsided but my whole body was aching all over. Then in the afternoon, my tummy was grumbling, tossing and turning. Evening came and dealt me a severe blow of stomach flu. Although I felt weak and dehydrated, I still had to pack for our road trip the next day.

Anyway, Christmas eve in Taiping and then Christmas day in my hometown of Ipoh was a rollercoaster of *thinking* I was getting better and then making an about-turn for the worst. All these amid the gift exchanges, fruit cake and red wine. My lower back was also hurting so bad I had to lie down as often as I could. Not a very easy feat to do with a toddler who demands your attention at all times, I tell you…

Finally, I woke up on Boxing Day feeling way better than I had felt in days. Up till now, I don’t know if it were the oysters that caused it because hubbs took them too and he felt fine. But thank goodness, I felt good enough on the 26th to savor the famous Ipoh kai-see-hor-fun, with lots and lots of kow-choy. Wouldn’t have missed that for a thing, even though we had to take turns carrying Ethan whilst eating because the shop did not have any baby chairs available. After lunch it was back to Penang, where more Christmas presents awaited us, well most of them were for Ethan actually. Two more Christmas cards arrived in the mailbox; a handmade one from Mei Lee and a card with a cute gift in it from Rinnah. Thank you darlings! You gals rock!

So today it is back to the humdrum of work. The past week of battling illness has worn me out so much that I booked myself a facial today, just so I could get some me-time in the equation. And so, after my longwinded story of how I spent Christmas, here’s the Christmas tag, as promised. Still done within the 12 days of Christmas… hehe… so enough about me… how was YOUR Christmas?

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate… because I don’t even know what egg nog tastes like.
2. Does Santa wrap the presents or just sit them under the tree? Methinks his elves wrap the presents. Santa just delivers them, no?
3. Colored or white lights? Whitish amber lights. And blinking ones.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Not this year, but I would love to. Next year, perhaps?
5. When do you put your decorations up? I already did… two weeks ago. And they are still up…maybe till after New Year comes and goes.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Mom’s homecooked food.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Spending Christmas with my family, writing long lists of presents for Santa and hoping he’ll bring them :)
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I can’t remember… but I really really thought I heard him and his sleigh on the roof some Christmases ago.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Nah…it has to be past midnight, i.e. really really Christmas.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? With my bare hands, and of course, this year, with silver and blue ornaments.
11. Snow: Love it or hate it? Love love love! But must have awesome boots to parade in la.
12. Can you ice skate? Not if you call skating falling on my butt! O-U-C-H!!
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? The gift of salvation, when I was baptized on Christmas day many many years ago.
14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Spreading love and cheer to everyone dear.
15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Cheese cake, with a strawberry on top. Had it at the E&O that fateful day… no strawberry on top of that one though.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Singing Christmas carols together as a family.
17. What is on top of your tree? A silver star

18. Which do you like best giving or receiving? Both. I also like shopping :)
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Away in a Manger, O Little Town of Bethlehem, The Christmas Song, O Holy Night…okay, I love all the Christmas songs…
20. Do you like candy canes? Not really, but I’ll take them if I get them :)

Sending Christmas cheer, peace and goodwill in the form of a tag to Rinnah!… also because she announced she is tag-free! hehe…
