I am an ardent fan of reality shows. It all started with Survivor, I guess. Then I moved on to shows like The Apprentice, America’s Next Top Model, American Idol and The Contender. Who would have guessed that I would be hooked on a boxing reality show like The Contender? Blood, guts and glory? Ah yes, all prime ingredients for an awesome, uplifting, inspirational hour each week.
I now view boxing differently because of The Contender. Boxing is not just about two men in a ring, trying to outpunch each other. It is not about giving your opponent a “hug” when you are trying to avoid his jabs and uppercuts. It is so much more than that.
And now I wait in eager anticipation for the great boxing match between the yet undefeated heavyweight boxer Roman Greenberg and veteran boxer Damon Reed. This boxing match is touted to be an exciting one, especially with Greenberg, whose major sponsor is Backgammon Masters, the people who brought us the popular online backgammon, going up against Reed, who is ten years his senior. Will experience triumph over naivety? Or will youth be potentially the winning trump card? I guess we will need to wait till August 18th to find out the outcome of this David vs Goliath match, won’t we?
Press Release:
The yet undefeated heavyweight boxer Roman Greenberg 25-0 (17), born in Russia, raised in Israel and currently trains in the UK, is scheduled to battle Damon Reed at the South Town Exhibition Center in Sandy, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA on August 18. Greenberg, only 25, is going up against 35 year old veteran boxer Damon Reed 43-11 (30). Greenberg’s last fight was in March against Michal Simms where Greenberg beat Simms, battling it out in 10 rounds in New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Greenberg spokesperson Clive Bernath says “Reed will provide Roman with the toughest test of his impressive unbeaten career so far.” The Greenberg vs. Reed match is the headlining event on pay-per-view along with 3 additional big name matches showcasing professional heavyweights and cruiserweights such as David “Tuaman” Tua, “Baby” Joe Mesi and Jeremy Williams.
Greenberg is also rumored to be on a short list of three possible opponents to face Vitali Klitschko in a come back fight in September. Klittschko has not been in the ring since 2004 against Britain’s Danny Williams.
http://www.BackgammonMasters.com online backgammon operator has been a major sponsor of Greenberg since early on in his career when Greenberg was relatively unknown. Now spokespersons for the company say they instantly saw his potential and have known all along that Greenberg was “born to be a world champ”.

You watch the Contender too? My favorite boxer from the series is still little Alfonso Gomez. He has such heart. Hehe.
The Giddy Tiger says: Heart of gold and can pack a punch too!
