Steamed Mushroom Chicken Rice

When my hubby and I go out for lunch on working days, there are only several places we like to go to.  That’s really weird given the fact that we stay in Penang and Penang is supposedly brimming with a variety of hawker food and fantastic eateries.  I guess it’s because we have already tried almost everything around our workplace.  So it was really a breath of fresh air when my hubby introduced me to a stall selling steamed mushroom chicken rice.  He had gone there with a friend of his before and had liked how it tastes.  This stall is located in a small restaurant beside the Penang Snake Temple.  Parking could be a tad of a problem though, if it is during lunch time.

What is steamed mushroom chicken rice?  Instead of the conventional claypot chicken rice or the regular chicken rice, the steamed mushroom chicken rice is exactly what it is.  Pieces of marinated chicken with mushroom placed on top of steamed rice in a ceramic bowl normally used for broiling soup, and then steamed in the old-fashioned wooden steamers, used for pau.  The result is a tasty meal of chicken rice without the drying effect of claypot chicken rice.  It tastes exceptionally good with cili padi, giving it the extra *kick*.  One serving costs only RM3.50 and it also comes with a small bowl of clear soup.  They also have it in the salted fish and pork ribs variety.

Good food for such a reasonable price.  Trust me, I had it for lunch just now. 🙂

Ok, ok, I want that too! Sold!! Next to the Snake Temple? Hmmmm… Sure it’s chicken?

The Giddy Tiger says: Eh, it’s chicken la…snake meat doesn’t look like that… more reason for you to visit Penang when you next come back to Msia?

  2. Oh absolutely droolworthy!! I shall attempt this in my kitchen soon 🙂

The Giddy Tiger says: I was gonna try it too… but I’ll have to improvise as I don’t own those traditional steamers.

It’s hard to find good steamed rice in KL that hasn’t been steamed dry as the desert. Still looking for one in the KL vicinity. *grin*

If not, I’ll have to drive all the way up to Penang for this one!

The Giddy Tiger says: I’ve not seen this being sold anywhere else. Oh, and when you do come by, give me a holler and we go together, ok?

that almost looks like my version of chicken rice – chicken, mushrooms, chinese sausages, thick and light soya sauce – put into a rice cooker and boiled together with the rice. all that’s missing are the bits of cut chili at the top!

The Giddy Tiger says: The version you mentioned is the kind I make…. which reminds me, it’s about time I cooked claypot chicken rice at home one of these weekends… they taste DIVINE with cilipadi.
