Yesterday morning, while driving to work, Phat Fabes and Ben on the Fly FM morning show were on the hunt for a place selling dungeness crabs. Apparently a listener had requested for them to help him source for these crabs because he had promised to take his wife she would get to eat them as a celebration for their wedding anniversary. All this because she is a seafood lover.
Ben (on the phone in Cantonese): Cheng mun lei tei yow mai *dungeness crabs* mou? (Do you guys sell dungeness crabs here?) [how to say dungeness crabs in Cantonese wor?]
Person on the phone: Meh lei keh? (What is it?)
Ben: Hai lei keh (Crabs)
Person on the phone: Mou wor, ngo tei mou mai *dungeness crabs* (No we do not sell dungeness crabs here)
This process went on several times, but I didn’t get to hear the part where they actually found a place selling those crabs. I know they eventually were successful though, because I heard a snippet later that evening of them informing that man’s wife that she would get to eat those delicious crabs soon. Man, they’re good!
Anyway, all this talk of dungeness crabs has got me wondering if I can get hold of some here in Penang too. I do still have a box of Singapore Chilli Crab paste which I bought during my last trip to Singapore, and I would absolutely LOVE to try cooking that with dungeness crabs. I haven’t tasted these species of crabs before, but from what I read, they sound truly lip-smacking good! I think they are seasonal though, and I would really love to savour that sweet sweet crab meat, which I trust would go so well cooked with chilli. So anyone knows where I can find some in Penang? Anyone? Or should I call Fly FM?
So you are going to cook your “imported” crab by chilies ? I have tried salted eggs crab, onion crab, black pepper crab and curry crab before.. nice nice..
The Giddy Tigress says: Yeah, if I can only get hold of it π
Dungeness Crab? Really Dungu? I am sure someone out there will know if there are any in Penang..
The Giddy Tigress says: I don’t know how to say it in Hokkien… maybe I can bring a picture when I go to the market? π
Wahhhh! The crabs look too inviting! This stall is in Penang?
*grabs two to try*
The Giddy Tigress says: No la…I took that picture from the net. I don’t know where these crabs can be found in Penang. Hopefully by the time you make your next trip here, I would have found out π

The Giddy Tigress says: What are those? Can I come over to your house to feast over them?

The Giddy Tigress says: Seriously??!! Wow…. how come everywhere but Penang?
i don’t know how to work through the shells. but i love crabs. but it’s going to waste on me, cause i eat crabs with a spoon and a fork.
The Giddy Tigress says: If only they make shell-less crabs, eh?
Any more Penang durians at this time of the year? Rambutans? I want to eat and ta pao them!
The Giddy Tigress says: Don’t see any durians being sold now…nor rambutans. If I see ’em, will you come up here?
I love crabs but can’t consume ’em! So sad!
The Giddy Tigress says: Poor dear…I detest peeling the shell off though.
tried b4, frankly its not really that good. bought it live from the beach at Oregon coast, they packed it in ice to keep it alive and quiet. took it home, wash it, the crab was kind of sleepy due to the ice, throw it into the pot, turn the burner on, as the water start warming up, you can see the crab start swimming happily, until the water starts getting hotter and the crab………..
anyway cut the story short, it is not exactly that good, i think the crab its over rated.
The Giddy Tiger says: Sorry to hear about the story of that crab π
Dunno where to get in Penang but here got a lot! hehehe…. Dungeness Crab is local to us here. π
The Giddy Tigress says: yeah, I read that you get loads at Fisherman’s Wharf. I wonder why I didn’t find out about it when I was there years ago… Care to courier some over?

The Giddy Tigress says: ngo ho kan yew seong sek tan hai moh kei wooi jek. Chooi fei lei cheng ngo sek, ho mou? π
This you got to ask Bee Yinn of RasaMalaysia.com. She’s from Penang and she can cook. I’m sure she can tell you whether you can get them in Penang or not.
Otherwise, just get some mud crabs and fry away.
The Giddy Tigress says: .. or come over to your place and you make some ??? π
If you can find in Penang let me know yeah! :)~~~~~
The Giddy Tigress says: And likewise from you too! π
I don’t know how to pronounce it either, but I’d love to have some the first chance I get!
The Giddy Tigress says: I agree! π
