Are These Beauty Quirks?

This morning I received a surprise.  I love surprises.

A silent reader of my blogs introduced herself and said hi to me (on the internet, of course). *waves*  Although it was a small gesture, it means a lot to me because it shows that there are people out there who actually spend time reading my posts, however insane they may be.  So to you, Ms Silent Reader, you know who you are, you made my day and I appreciate it.  Of course, I certainly welcome anyone else to drop a note or comment…I love reading what you think. 🙂

Coming back to what I wanted to post today…I recently read a very interesting account about Beauty Quirks on one of my favorite beauty blogs, Beautyholics Anonymous, and it got me to thinking if my beauty habits are a little quirky too.

Well, here’s 10 of mine.  You be the judge… 🙂

  1. My skincare regime after my shower must be in a specific order. I always always start with my face (skincare and sunblock) and then move on to my arms, body and then legs (lotion and sunblock). If I accidentally forget and apply lotion on my hands before applying sunblock on my face, I have to wash my hands and complete the face ritual first before proceeding.
  2. I need to finish step 1 before I start on my makeup, and I need to wash my hands before starting on makeup.
  3. I wash my hair every day, only in the evening. If I don’t, I can’t sleep at night. If I had my hair washed in the salon on that day because of a haircut, I would still wash my hair in the evening.
  4. I can leave the house without any makeup on. But I make sure I have my pair of Oakleys with me too. Just in case. Yeah, I’m vain that way.
  5. If I have time to apply just one item of makeup, I would use my eyeliner. Tightlining is my favorite thing, and it keeps me looking non-zombie-ish.
  6. When I get a new pair of shoes, I would undoubtedly put them on when I get home and do a model-esque parade around the house (before I actually wear those shoes out). Hmmm…it has been a long time since I had the chance to do that actually.
  7. I don’t love lipstick all that much. I can hear everyone gasping now. Well, no particular lipstick has managed to wow me in that way, but lately I have been quite happy with a lovely orchid pink shade from an Estee Lauder lippie I scored in a Twitter contest. Coincidence, much? 🙂
  8. When I wash my face, I splash it a total of 8 or 10 times. 8, if it’s already clean by then; if not, then 10.
  9. I paint the nails on my right hand first, then followed by my left. I had this quirk only recently when I discovered that being a right-hander, this method helped me get neater and cleaner looking results.
  10. I derive a sense of satisfaction and gratification from yanking out the entire strand of hair if I notice a split end on it. I probably should just be trimming it, eh, given that my hair is so little to begin with.

Outsmart and Outwit

A surprising vote from the kids this morning ended up with us heading to the market to get some ingredients for chicken porridge: chicken, carrots, ginger and spring onions.

However, what the kids did not know was that I decided to make a healthier version by using organic brown rice instead.  Before we left for the market, I had ground the brown rice a little and started the soaking process.  That certainly did the trick.  I started cooking the porridge 5 hours later and the results were fantastic.

Nobody could tell that I had used brown rice, not even hubby!  And everyone gave the meal two thumbs up!

Haha…who says I can’t make them eat brown rice? 🙂

Did the Groupon Deal Save My Hair?

A couple of months ago, I purchased a Groupon for a hair cut, wash and steam treatment at one of the hair salons in Penang.  I was looking forward to the day because I was long overdue for some hair pampering.

When I arrived at the salon that morning, I was greeted and attended to by a very nice lady who seemed genuinely concerned about my hair.  She mentioned a few things which really hit home.

She said she noticed the hair on the crown of my head thinning and asked if it was because of childbirth.  She also speculated that I slept late and that I did not use any treatment products for my hair.  She told me that she had that same problem previously too, and that she used to work for a hair loss treatment company which charged a fortune for clients with hair loss problems.  She said that she is currently using a combination of hair treatment products which cost less in the long run with the same results.

Of course, I was always skeptical when hair salon people recommend products.  I figured they were just trying to close a deal and get me to buy something from them.  But still, I listened to this lady when she spoke about the products and I asked questions.

These were the 2 products she recommended:

  • L’oréal Professionel Expert Series Pure Resource Citramine purifying shampoo
  • Mau Plus Hair Serum with Ginger Extract

She said conditioner is optional in my case, and if I wanted to use it as a detangler, I could apply only on the lower half of my hair.

Well, if you know me personally, you will know that my hair is naturally fine and very soft, and also very little.  Hair loss after childbirth has also contributed to my scarce amount of hair and I have always wondered how to resolve this problem.

In conclusion, I did not buy those products from her shop on that day itself, but went on home to do my research.  A few reviews on the shampoo told me that it was a good cleansing shampoo, and there were also some great reviews on the hair tonic.  Apparently one of the symptoms of hair loss in women is the occurrence of acne on the face, which I had been battling with for the past few months.  Could that be an indicator I had been ignoring all this time?

So I decided to bite the bullet and try out these products to see if they could help combat my hair loss, and hopefully promote hair growth.

After some investigation, I found out that the price of the L’oréal shampoo at the salon was the cheapest, so I went back to the salon to purchase the shampoo.  As for the hair tonic, I purchased it online.  I managed to get 2 bottles of the hair tonic for a specially reduced price too!

The shampoo is specially suitable to cleanse an oily scalp, which is one of the primary reasons causing hair loss.  And I loved that I could use it every day!  I reduced my use of the hair conditioner and only used it once a week, on the lower half of my hair.

The hair serum, I use when my hair is damp out of the shower in the evenings.  I squirt a little on the scalp, concentrating on the crown area and rub it a little to ensure it doesn’t trickle down my face.  The consistency of the serum is very watery, but when it is applied on the scalp, it lends a very cooling and refreshing feeling.  I was concerned about the sticky icky feeling of having something sit in my hair/scalp when I go to bed at night, but I was relieved that the serum actually gets absorbed totally into the scalp to do its magic, leaving me with a clean-feeling scalp.  The initial scent is also a very pleasant one, but it does not linger.

So then, what about the results?

I did notice the bottom of my hair getting thicker and fuller, and my hair didn’t feel as limp as before.  As for the crown part, I noticed only a little bit of improvement. I’ve used this combination for about 2 months now, and I’ve used up half the shampoo bottle (as is apparent in the picture above) and a full bottle of the hair serum.  Not entirely sure how long it will take to show results, since hair cycle growth takes a few years (s0metimes) to stabilize.

Here’s a pictorial comparison over the past couple of months, with pictures randomly taken.  Please excuse the state of my face in some of the photos.  I really wanted to show just the hair 🙂  For the record, my hair had not been cut or trimmed since that first hair salon visit.

Do you notice a difference?  Do you think the results will be much clearer in another 2 months’ time?

Oldie But Goodie: Salted Vegetable Tofu Soup

saltedvegesoup1

This soup was one of the few soups I used to dish out when I was a single working adult years ago.  It’s easy to make (dump everything inside), it’s delicious and it’s got that comforting factor, at least for me.  The sourish spicy flavor of the soup, together with its variety of ingredients make up a meal in itself too, if you’re not too picky.  Or you can simply eat it with steamed rice or your favorite noodles.

I had forgotten all about this soup until last weekend when I was browsing through a recipe book in the bookstore and saw a picture of this soup.  I started craving for it and today, I decided to transform that craving into a reality.

saltedvegesoup2

It was a delicious-smelling cauldron of spare ribs, salted vegetables, tomatoes, dried chillies and tofu, and it was my lunch for today 🙂

Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

mulberry1

I saw a mulberry bush for the first time last week when I accompanied my son on his field trip to the dairy goat farm.  Ironically enough, that oh-so-familiar nursery rhyme began playing in my head as I walked closer and closer to the plant.

It didn’t look like a *bush* to me, more like a little tree, with sparse leaves and tiny dots of mulberry fruits attached to the branches.

The caretaker of the farm told us we could pluck the mulberries and eat them straight off the tree, but he was careful to assist us in selecting a ripened fruit.  I did not ask why, but upon googling, I found out that unripened mulberries produce a sap which is intoxicating and mildly hallucinogenic!

Anyway, the mulberry I tried (the one I was holding in the first picture) was simply delicious!  It’s like a cross between a strawberry and a blackberry.  If I could plant a mulberry tree in my garden, I could make mulberry jam! 😀
