How I celebrated my birthday…

Last week, on October 21st, I celebrated yet another year of growing wiser… 🙂

With 2 birthday cakes:

One from hubster (a healthy option of carrot, walnut and raisin cake with cream cheese frosting):

Gosh, I just realized how tired I look in that picture!

… and a few days later I had another (not-so-healthy-but-equally-yummy option) chocolate cake from E&O hotel.

I celebrated with love and presents all around…

(L-R): Me, Hannah, my Mom, my niece Caitlynn and my brother Allan

I gained 2 pounds with all that eating… :(:(

If that was not enough, I even pampered myself with a long-overdued afternoon nap… 🙂

And to top it all off, my hubby surprised me with a totally unexpected birthday present…

Back to the Drawing Board

After about a month of enjoying our home without the presence of icky little lizards, we returned from our recent holidays in Genting Highlands to find out that those little creatures had returned!

I first spotted some lizard droppings, and the next day, I saw the little fella scurrying about the house.  It appeared to be quite active too, crawling around on the walls one minute, up the curtains the next and then across the floor following that.

Well, looks like the eggshell method was only a temporary stopgap measure…

I have since resorted to the another method recommended by my friend: use dried chillies.  I’m putting a couple of pieces of dried chillies on my kitchen counter, hoping that they will chase the lizards away.  I might place them on the floor soon too.  Let’s hope this works!

Sigh…anyone else have any other suggestions on how to get rid of lizards?

With my own two hands…

Lately I have had the fascination for handmade jewelry, and by that, I mean jewelry made by my own two hands.  Okay, I had been procrastinating on this for about a year now, but the important thing is that I’m doing it now, yes?

So anyways, I got myself some tools and pretty little blings, and started to experiment.  I’ve only made three pairs of earrings thus far, and I can tell you that they are not as easy as I thought they would be.

But there’s surely something magical about wearing jewelry I made myself…pride and vanity: don’t they make an ideal combination? 🙂

Saved by the Shells

eggshell

A few weeks ago, I posted my dilemma on my Facebook status and asked friends to recommend a solution.

My dilemma?  I wanted to know how to get rid of house lizards (geckos) using natural methods.

I received a few suggestions from some friends, so I started by trying the first one on the list: using eggshells.

The next week or so saw me placing eggshells at strategic locations, mostly in the kitchen, where I really didn’t want those icky reptiles to be.  I replaced the eggshells with new ones whenever I cooked eggs.  I placed them on the kitchen counters, near the sink, near the stove and on the window sill.

After a week of placing those eggshells in the kitchen, I am very pleased to note that I haven’t seen a single lizard AT ALL in my kitchen.  Before this, I would sometimes find lizard droppings on the kitchen counter, sometimes near our cups and sometimes IN our cups (ewww!)  But it has been a few weeks now, and nothing 🙂

Well, a few days into putting those eggshells around the kitchen, I caught one lizard hiding behind the curtains.  So I placed two more eggshells in the dry area (near the curtains).  I had to be careful to put these eggshells at locations where my kids would not trample on them.

So it looks like I found a solution to my problem.

But now, I am left with a kitchen that has eggshells strewn at certain spots.  It’s really an eyesore, and I would love it if that would not be the case, but I am afraid that if I took away those eggshells, the lizards would reappear.  What should I do now, guys?  Should I start decorating these eggshells?  How long should I keep these eggshells there in order to ensure the lizards are gone forever?
