Left right left right July 13, 2007

Have you had any experience talking to someone with shifty eyes? I have! …. And I don’t like it at all! Nuh-uh….eyes moving left and right as I am trying to have a decent conversation? No way!

I once read that people with shifty eyes convey the message of distrust, insincerity and lack of interest. I find it so distracting when in the course of conversation, as I am trying to explain something, the person I am conversing with has his or her eyes moving left and right. It’s not that their head is moving, just the eyes! I’m not sure if it’s a habit or not, but if it is, it is a habit that ought to be nipped!

Looking away from a person’s face once in a while during the conversation is acceptable, perhaps as an *intermission* to gather one’s thoughts but to shift one’s glance briefly and then shift back to the conversant in a repetitive manner, that’s just what I would retort with a “How rude!”, in the style of PB. So tell me, am I just plain fussy or am I making sense?

Paying It Forward July 12, 2007

So I finally watched Pay It Forward last night on 8TV. I’ve been meaning to watch this show since it was released but never had the opportunity nor the time. I heard that this was a show that was poignant and that it would tug at heartstrings, what with Haley Joel Osment being in the lead and all. Boy was I glad I caught it last night. In typical MLM fashion, Pay It Forward tells of a *movement* started by a young kid, Trevor, to spread goodwill throughout the world. Well, in the movie, it only spread within the US of A, but you get the idea. How this is done is that one person will try to help 3 others by doing something FOR them that they are unable to do themselves, or perhaps just give them a push (sometimes a shove) in the right direction. These 3 people then, instead of returning the favor done by the original first guy, will then need to help 3 other people each, i.e. paying it forward. This will result in what I like to call it, a pyramid of goodwill. But anyways, long story short….watch the show. It will change the way you view life.

After the show, I was reminded of this tag I had pending from Rinnah. It has been a very busy week for me, because at work I have been buried in issues and issues on end, and I found it hard to smell the roses, short of sounding cliché. But that being said, I told myself that I would find the time to do this unique tag today…. one that will allow me to do my little bit for charity. What’s special about this tag is that blogger Idham has pledged to contribute RM127 to the Darul Izzah Orphanage for every completed meme. The catch is that the meme MUST be completed by August 26 2007. Isn’t that great? It’s so easy! All that needs to be done is to complete just 17 sentences from the list below, and then drop Idham a comment to say that you’ve completed it . So just by writing and completing this fun and rather thought-provoking meme, I would be contributing RM127 to the Darul Izzah Orphanage! It’s making me feel good already! And it’s one of my Pay It Forward instances.

And now, the following folks can also help the kids at the orphanage too, by just completing this meme. If you’d feel like taking this up anyway, please feel free to do so!

Vainpot Me! July 9, 2007

I’ve had people come up and tell me that I am vain. I’m not sure if it was in jest or in all seriousness. I really hope it is in a good way VAIN, whatever that means. So in one of my blur moments of realization, I stumbled on this interesting quiz and I knew I had to take it immediately. Interested to see what it revealed? There….

You Are 89% Vain

You’re beyond vain. Besides being obsessed with your looks, you’re obsessed with everyone else’s looks.
Yes, you look amazing. But you also need to be fabulous on the inside to be truly attractive.

How Vain Are You?

Whoa! That’s 11% short of being 100% vain!…. You tell me if that’s good or bad? :P

I suppose these are the few reasons why I have attained an 89% score in vanity:

  1. I pose in front of the mirror every now and then. This would explain why I take ages in the fitting room when I try on new outfits. I try to emulate the sultry, sexy, playful, whatchamacallit looks supermodels use when they are modelling.  I have a lot of mirrors in my house and I check myself out when I go past them :P  Yes, mirrors help give the effect of space in my crib, but it also serves as a means for me to be vain :P
  2. My favorite channel on TV is E! Especially the snippets where they demonstrate how ordinary looking people can look all glammed up. I take these tips very seriously. For instance, tips like putting a bright colored eye shadow on the inner corner of your eye will help make your eyes look larger. I tried that and it works!
  3. I am very easily persuaded to buy beauty products, and recently on E! they revealed that one of the top 20 products the celebrities use is Estee Lauder’s Perfectionist CP+. I asked my friend who was traveling in the States at that time to get a bottle for me. But too bad it was out of stock. Maybe everyone saw the same program I did?
  4. A few days or weeks before attending a function, like a wedding dinner, I would scour my wardrobe for a suitable piece of attire to wear. I would put it on and parade in it with shoes and accessories. Helps me get in the mood of things. :)
  5. I will willingly wear and bear with shoes which are highly uncomfortable, as long as they look good on me. I know that it’s unhealthy but it’s the price I am willing to pay for the sake of vanity.
  6. I don’t leave home without makeup on. In fact, I feel naked if I am makeup-less. If I have no time, I will still dab on a bit of concealer and some eyeliner.  However, what’s weird is that I don’t wear lipstick. I hate the feeling of lipstick on my lips. I’ll probably go as far as lip gloss on an everyday basis but lipstick I will only put on ONLY for MAJOR functions. And I can’t be bothered to touch up either.
  7. When I was pregnant, I continued being vain by wearing strapless maternity wear. I refused to even look at night-gown-like dresses adorned with bows or duckling and chicken motifs.

So how vain are you, really? I’d like to know… so I am tagging:

Wuching - some guys are vain too. Are you one of them?

NOTHING!

It rained heavily on Friday evening and Saturday morning, chasing the horrid haze away.  Now I can see the Penang Bridge from my apartment again and the first thing my mind did was play this tune in my head… (starts singing)

I can see clearly now the rain has come…
I can see all obstacles in my way…
Gone are the dark clouds that had me bound…
It’s gonna be a bright bright sunshiny day!

Battle of Gears and Formulas July 7, 2007

Don’t you just love online games?  I know I could never get enough of those.  They come in so handy when I have nothing to do, and my fingers just need a little exercise.  Even if it is just mouse-clicking exercise.  Now there’s another new online game to add to my growing list.  And I was surprised to find out that it comes from the popular site that sells used cars as well as bring us the latest motoring news!

This new game is a question and answer game called Top Gear vs Formula One, with characters of the online game taken from the Top Gear program presenters and also Formula 1 drivers.  I would have loved for the game to have more characters to choose from, but I suppose that would be in the coming enhancements.  As of now, we only have a choice of six.

Yep, all you need to do is to choose a character to represent yourself and then choose another character to represent your opponent.  Then answer a series of questions.  There are only two answers to choose from, so even if you don’t know the answer, just take a guess.  It’s a 50:50 chance of getting it right.  Now, this is where the fun begins :)

Once the online referee flags off the game, the questions will be shown to you one by one.  If you answer a question correctly, watch in glee as your nominated character beats upyour opponent! Hehehe…. of course, your character will get beaten up instead if you get the answer wrong.  Each character gets 7 *lives*, so you need to answer 7 questions correctly in order to win.  I really love the animations this game comes with, and it’s so hilarious to see (for example) Michael Schumacher tumble over with stars around his head!  This game is a great stress-buster and the awesome thing about it is that you can just repeat the game unlimited times if you’re not satisfied with the outcome!  Oh, and did I mention it is FREE?

Innovative Bingo July 6, 2007

Posted by The Giddy Tiger in : Relax & Celebrate , 8comments

It’s Friday again. Sometimes I wonder how I ever manage to make it through a long boring disastrous week. But yay, the weekend is finally here. I received this email a few minutes ago and the subject really caught my eye. I think it would be an interesting thing to do and would liven up any boring meeting. Anyone care to try?

How to survive a boring meeting/seminar

This is guaranteed to liven up a boring meeting/seminar!

Do you keep falling asleep in meetings & seminars? What about those long & boring conference calls? Here’s a way to change all that:
1. Before (or during) your next meeting, seminar, or conference call, prepare for the meeting by drawing a square - 5″ x 5″ is a good size.
2. Divide the square into columns - five across and five down. That will give you 25 one-inch blocks.
3. In each block, write one of the following words/phrases:

synergy
strategic fit
core competencies
best practice
bottom line
revisit
take that off-line
24/7
out of the loop
benchmark
value added
proactive
win-win
think outside the box
fast track
result-driven
empower(ment)
knowledge base
at the end of the day
touch base
mindset
client focus(ed)
ballpark
game plan
leverage

4. Whenever you hear any one of those words/phrases, check off the appropriate block.
5. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically,or diagonally, stand up and shout “BULLSHIT!”

Testimonials from satisfied “Bullshit Bingo” players:

“I had been in the meeting for only five minutes when I won.”
“My attention span at meetings has improved drastically.”
“What a gas! Meetings will never be the same for me.”
“The atmosphere was tense in our last process meeting as 14 of us waited for the fifth box.”
“The speaker was stunned as eight of us screamed BULLSHIT! for the third time in two hours.”

I googled for Bullshit Bingo and found that there is a site that generates these random BS Bingo cards! Isn’t that innovative?

Sharing some Linky Love July 6, 2007

After a long hiatus from memes and tags, the king is BACK! I think I was tagged by him before on this same one but I will oblige since I like to spread the linky love around!

*****

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them an extra link back.

2. Copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog then change it when you do your post and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword.

3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.

4. Add at least 1 new blog that you KNOW is using the DO FOLLOW plugin to the list in the “My Adds” section. (Add no more than 5!) Let the people you’ve added know, so that they can keep the list going!

Memories are made of these… July 5, 2007

I have been wondering what the difference is between the regular Old Town White Coffee and the Nanyang Memorably. Both kinds of coffee are served in the Old Town kopitiam franchise and being a non-coffee drinker myself, the difference between the two still eludes me. However, a couple of days ago, my hubby was out with some colleagues of his and had the opportunity to try the Nanyang Memorably iced coffee. And he has been raving about it ever since. I suspect he is very much addicted to it. I too was curious as to how good this glass of mojo is, so we had lunch at Old Town today and I had my first taste of the memorable Nanyang Memorably.

Served in 2 layers, with really thick coffee (read: caffeine overload) at the bottom and topped with frothy milk which I suspect is evaporated milk, the Nanyang Memorably is not for the faint-of-heart. Even though the ice did dilute it somewhat, it was very strong and it will definitely give the conventional latté a run for its money. Stir it up real good and have a go at it. Every sip was like an instant shot of caffeine straight to the brain, guaranteed to perk one up for the rest of the entire day.

As for the difference between the white coffee and its memorable counterpart, anyone wanna volunteer and help me shed some light?

Got Me Feeling Emotions July 5, 2007

Do you think women are more emotionally sensitive compared to men? Do women tend to get irked more easily? Is the “getting hurt” threshold lower in women compared to men?

Recently I was personally thrown into a situation where I “felt” I was being taken for granted. I voiced my displeasure to my hubby who advised me to use outright confrontation to sort of get it off my chest, as opposed to the subtler method I had employed. In the end, the entire brouhaha turned out to be just me making a mountain out of a molehill as there was really nothing to be distressed about, hence the use of the inverted quotes in the word “felt”.

When I was in primary school, I was involved in a few spates of “don’t friend you” business. It wasn’t that I was difficult to deal with, and it wasn’t because I was a recluse, because now that I recall it, there were other people involved in it too! I can’t even remember why I “don’t friend” these particular people now, because in the end we worked it out, and some of them are now actually my close friends. Call it childhood squabbles or what you may, but when I shared these incidents with my hubby, he tells me that he has never been in any of these situations before when he was young. All he remembers were playing with his friends using the “lastik” and having fun.

Which left me thinking, are women more prone to emotional battles? Could it be that women treat friendship differently than men? Do women treat friends as confidantes, someone they can trust with their whole heart, so much so that the very slightest hint of betrayal, however minuscule, would throw them into a state of frenzy, threatening the end of a beautiful friendship? That is, until a well-thought apology (usually done with aplomb) is given? Are we women just drama queens or do we really have a point here?

Roti roti seri me! July 5, 2007

Do you know that I can sit right in front of a particular restaurant watching the rotisserie at work for hours? Just the sight of chicken being rotated and cooked at the same time makes me salivate. If there’s one thing that will attract patrons to the restaurant, installing upscale rotisseries would definitely do the trick.  What could be more enticing than watching raw meat being browned and roasted slowly but surely with this traditional style of French cooking? If I had the means to open a restaurant business, one of the first items I would consider getting would be a rotisserie.  For lazy people like me, there is even rotisseries that are self-cleaning!
