Driving Miss Competence

Last weekend, as we were driving back from the mall, we had an encounter of the fourth kind. Not an alien, but this one is a menace on the road and is a danger to everyone.

Yes, the nincompoop of a driver.

There the car was, right in front of us, hogging the fast lane, as if the driver and its passengers were having a field trip, admiring the surrounding view. My hubby, who was driving then, flashed the headlights once at the driver as a warning.

Nothing happened.

Flash again. Twice. Added a honk for effect.

I noticed the driver looking into the rear view mirror, but he did not indicate that he was about to switch lanes.

Then slowly, the car moved to the left lane and slowed down as we were approaching the traffic lights.

As we passed the car, I could not resist catching a glimpse of the driver.

And as soon as I did, I turned and smugly announced to my husband, “Hah! It’s a guy!”

🙂

We have this understanding, my hubby and I. He seems to think that most women don’t drive as well as men. Of course I think otherwise, and never fail to pounce at every opportunity I have to make that fact known. But had it been a lady driver, I would have kept quiet la…unless of course if the car was a kancil, then I’d shake my head and go, “Haiya…kancil ma..” (sorry, Kancil drivers, it’s a case of one bad apple spoils the barrel here.)

Anyway, my hubby stands firm in his belief that men in general are better drivers than women. He goes, “Otherwise, how come we don’t see any women Formula One drivers?”

And I’d go, “But being a Formula One driver only means you can drive fast, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can drive WELL. Besides we women have far better things to do…” (like ogle at *certain* Formula One drivers, for instance)

So what say you? Do men or women make better drivers?

    MEN!

    no question, no doubt.

The Giddy Tigress says: Hhmmmph! How very predictable!

  2. Collin says:

errr…too young to comment…I know I only drive Papa and Mama up the wall…am quite good at it too!….:-p

The Giddy Tigress says: I’m sure you are! And don’t worry, you will have plenty to time to practise your driving skills when you grow up!

  3. Jemima says:

Some men are better drivers than women.
Some women are better drivers than men.

I think you should be asking how many women knows how to change a puncture & how many men doesn’t know how to change a puncture.. then we can discuss about competence. 🙂

The Giddy Tigress says: Now THAT’s a fantastic question to determine competence. LOL

Was the driver an old guy?

I won’t say who is the better driver but driving in Penang is much better than in KL.

The Giddy Tigress says: Yeah, how did you guess it was an old guy? Hehe…. Actually I beg to differ. I think KL drivers are more courteous. They let you switch lanes when you turn on the indicator, for example….but in Penang, the driver just goes faster. However, KL drivers do tend to tailgate really close though.

  5. LB says:

The guy was probably thinking that since petrol prices went up, no sane person would still be using the fast lane as a fast lane… 🙂

The Giddy Tigress says: But driving so slow would use up more petrol, no? hehehe…

  6. kyh says:

I’ll say men too! But my mum is quite a good driver… 😉

The Giddy Tigress says: Maybe all men inherit good driving skills from their moms! 😀

  7. Isn’t that annoying when it happens? I am not going to comment on the lady vs man driving skill. I have to hear that comment everyday …. over and over and over again ..

The Giddy Tigress says: Sometimes I just wanna scream… 😛

  8. PB says:

Women 😛 Then again of the men I know I only trust my Dad’s driving because he drives with caution but fast enough. I’d like to think I inherited his driving skills. 😛 Every other male I know either drives too fast or too slow or too suddenly as in sudden turns, lane changes etc. So by default my answer is women

The Giddy Tigress says: Men who drive FAST normally claim they are in total control of the car… 😆

  9. zewt says:

hmmmm…. any comment on this might lead to a sexist debate so…. :)….

men and women all the same lah….

The Giddy Tigress says: Ah, a very safe and smart answer 🙂

  10. mistipurple says:

for a moment i was wondering why it’s a left hand drive. lol. blur moo.

The Giddy Tigress says: Aha. Now you know…

  11. Well, some guys I had raced with before had thought that I was a pretty good driver (in my stupid reckless green days, lar) But now i just drive like an auntie. got kids in car, mah !

The Giddy Tigress says: But an auntie who is a good driver la! You go girl!

  12. jazzmint says:

ermm…men :P…i have to agree that men are better drivers. women on the road sometimes can drive me up the wall LOL

The Giddy Tigress says: Oh, but you haven’t come across MEN who drive like jerks?

  13. Uncle Lee says:

Hi, 22 years driving here, and three hits on my car…regret to say, all 3 women.
One, a lady reversing her Mercedes while gossiping on her h/phone. I was waiting in the carpark in my car, for my wife, and reading the papers…almost got my neck snapped off too with the bang!
Second, a lady chatting with her friend in the car…again reversing, looked left, looked right, forgot centre, and smacked into my car. She learned a $750 lesson to next time look at her rear view mirror.
And last year, a lady driving a big SUV, again reversed without checking…slammed smack dab into my car, a bad one too, she learned a $3,500 lesson on how to reverse.
Should have seen her hubby, he in the car, she driving…he bbq’eq and stir fried her for not checking all 3 mirrors.

Most women I know are good drivers, only I am now very wary if notice them chatting on h/phones or gossiping with a friend…I have now installed the loudest Air Horns on the market…
    Ha ha.
    Best regards, Lee.

The Giddy Tigress says: You are so funny Lee! And yes, those women encounters of yours are prime examples of SOME women who should not even be given keys to drive! However, speaking of reversing accidents, I almost had one a few months ago, when a MAN in and SUV reversed his car and made a tyre imprint on the side of my car (there was a traffic jam in a very narrow road in the neighborhood). Thank goodness I managed to honk on time to alert him and thank goodness he was reversing quite slowly. SIGH.

  14. kyh says:

but hor, u’ll feel like cursing if u’re behind those pak hajis. man… they all drive like 30 km/hr!!! =.=”

The Giddy Tigress says: It’s not only them la…. and I’d bet if we were to overtake them, they’d shake their heads in disapproval and go like “Tsk tsk…young people nowadays…”

  15. cc says:

I’m going to choose the politically correct answer here, both! Haha.
I’ve encounter bad drivers from both sexes in the past.

The Giddy Tigress says: I hope drivers are much better behaved in NZ!

  16. rinnah says:

I’m afraid I have to agree with Pete here… I tend to think that generally men are better drivers than women. I have seen my fair share of nincompoop drivers and 90% of the time they are women. (Current company excepted, of course.) I get very irritated with these women because they give off the impression that ALL women can’t drive – which is obviously a fallacy! I like to think that I’m a pretty good driver myself. LOL.

The Giddy Tigress says: And of course I like to think that I am a good driver too 🙂

  17. Paik Ling says:

I wouldn’t think that women are “bad” drivers but I would tend to agree with anyone who says that women are less considerate drivers. They are the ones who won’t let you cut into their lane although you signaled an hour ago, and will drive at dare devil speed in their yes-Kancils.

The Giddy Tigress says: Oh yes, I do agree with you on that. And I have caught myself scolding many a woman driver for that “crime”

  18. Boss Cat says:

Guys always think they are better drivers which i don’t think so. and guys always think that ladies have zero knowledge on cars. BUT i need to say that my lady lecturer actually knows about car modification, body kit and SHE DRAG RACE at Batu Kawan. woooooohoooooo… *i do drag race at Need For Speed too*

The Giddy Tigress says: Woohooo!!! Coolness!!!
