I received a phone call from a consultant from a reputable fitness center a couple of days ago. I had filled out their online form to request for more details and they were merely returning my call.
After the usual questions and offers of free fat analysis etc, I asked him if he could share what the membership fee was.
Consultant: Ma’am, why don’t you come over to our center and I can then share with you details on the membership fee?
Me: Why can’t you just let me know briefly what the fees are like right now?
Consultant: Because it’s better if I explain it to you in person.
Me: Okay, but before we do that, can you at least tell me how much the monthly fee is? I’m specifically interested in the weekday-only rates.
Consultant: I’m sorry, Ma’am , but I can’t do that over the phone.
Me: What?! Why not?
Consultant: Because the conversation is recorded.
Me: Okay. Well, no problem. I don’t mind my voice being recorded. Go ahead.
Consultant: I’m sorry we can’t do that. Why don’t you come over and we can discuss?
Me: It doesn’t make any sense why you can’t tell me the prices over the phone. It’s not a secret.
Consultant: It’s our company’s policy.
Me: Well it doesn’t make any sense to me. Okay then, I’ll call if I’m interested. Bye.
Does anyone know the REAL reason why they could not divulge the prices over the phone?
Maybe they need to ‘customise’ and negotiate certain prices so that they can get better commision?…:-P…so, now we know not everyone is paying the same price at these fitness centres…:-p
The Giddy Tigress says: Yeah man…some under the table thingy going on, eh?
They are afraid you are from the competitions.
The Giddy Tigress says: But so what if I am? Even a competitor could turn up at their gym and find out about their membership rates. And besides anyone can talk and the rates will be spread through word-of-mouth anyway.
They will not tell u because they want to get u in and explain or tell u all the great stuff they have to offer and how they will benefit u before they scar u with a price. Normally they will have like a trial price (a cheap one) just to lure clients in then try to change their mind. I know this from my experience working in a establish well known weight loss company 🙂
The Giddy Tigress says: Thanks for your inputs, Melissa! Well, in this case, they didn’t even want to reveal their “lure-in” price!
