January 1st 2008 marks my five-year anniversary as an employee in the current company I work in. Throughout the span of five years in the IT department, I have had three different managers and have had to move my workplace/cubicle on three different occassions. I still find it hard to believe that five years have gone by already in a *somewhat* blink of an eye. So many support calls, so many conducted trainings and attended trainings (I even had the opportunity to attend a training entitled “Love My Job”), grouses and grimaces, and meal celebrations peppered those five wonderful and also not-so-wonderful years at work. Ahem. Well, let’s just say there were up days and down days.
When I was in school, I remember doing a career quiz that promised to tell me what career would suit my personality, i.e. a job that I would be comfortable doing and be happy in. I remember clearly that the results I obtained told me that the occupations I would be suited for are those that would make me use my hands as part of the job. The quiz cited examples such as a florist or artist. There was no mention of an IT career, or even something along the lines of project management, stuff which I am involved in now.
A job that makes use of my hands…well, that’s a million miles away from where I am today, isn’t it? I never ventured to be a florist or an artist so I don’t think I will ever know if those are career options that I would find happiness in. That makes me wonder if everyone actually had jobs that really suit their personality, will everyone proclaim that they love their job, and not even have to attend the training I did? Will everyone attain job satisfaction?
Coincidentally I found another similar career quiz today and decided to take it, just out of curiosity to see if there would be a difference. And here’s what it says:

I’m going to make a change after being disappointed in corporate world for almost 5 years too… I wish to enjoy what I do even it doesn’t promise a lucrative income. There are ways, if you know what I mean.

3 managers & 3 office moves in 5 years? You are lucky! I had 3 managers , organization, job changes and of course office cubicle changes in less than 1 year alone. I won’t even count how many times I have changed in my entire career in this company!

Wow … five years with the same company ? I don’t think that’s for me, but all around me in my company, I find people who’ve been around for 10 years, 20 years … one even 32 years !!
