A Cozy Home Palette to Love

It has been some time since I last blogged about the progress of our new home.  We have taken some time to check for slight damages to be rectified, and then we have also been getting renovation quotations from several contractors.  Actual renovation works finally commenced sometime in September, and if everything goes as planned, our home will be move-in ready in 2-3 months. We recently finalized our choice on the grille door after sleeping over a few designs.  Finally, we have a design that both hubby and I agree on…and that’s no mean feat! Even trickier was the task of choosing the paint colors for our home.  Not easy considering hubby prefers more subdued colors and I, on the other hand, lean towards bolder hues.  If the reality TV show The Apartment had casted us as contestants, let me just say that there would have been some pretty interesting airtime from both of us… 🙂 Of course we eventually managed to compromise on color selections…marriage is all about compromise, yes?

We chose a more or less neutral gray tone for the overall living space, with some walls having darker hues for interest and contrast.

I had to abandon my idea of having an orange-accented wall in the kitchen in favor of a neutral gray tone.  This is because the open concept design of our home creates a fluidity from the living room right into the kitchen.  If the wall color of the kitchen is different, the space will seem smaller and less fluid.  Since the living room would be decked in gray, it only makes sense to continue this color throughout the kitchen.

So we then decided that the children’s playroom would get a splash of orange instead.  It’s the closest room to the kitchen, which makes perfect sense since I could watch over the kids while the spent their time in the playroom.

The girls would each get a room either in pink or purple tones: girly colors I absolutely adore!  As for my boy, we chose a very interesting blue shade on two walls of his room.  I’d wanted some horizontal stripes on one wall; the idea looked really interesting and would be great in a boy’s room, but I suppose that would have to wait…

Hubby chose a yellow shade for our home office.  According to him, yellow promotes creativity and is a good “thinking” color.  Not complaining about this one, ‘cos we agreed on a combination of yellow and grey hues for this room too, which I absolutely love.

We had a long discussion on the colors for the master bedroom though.  Initially I wanted a teal-colored feature wall, but it was too “green” for hubby’s liking.  Grey was too gray for me…so we’ve finalized on a color that is a cross between teal and gray.  Hey, it’s actually chosen from the neutral palette, so I’m sure it would look fantastic.

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake: The Cake for No-Frosting-Cake Lovers

I’m sure you’ve come across people who don’t like frosting on their cakes, for whatever reason.  Me?  I love my frosting.  AND I love my cakes.  Haha.

But anyway, I recently baked a pineapple upside-down cake for hubby’s birthday.  He’s not too keen on frosting, so when I learnt about this cake from a friend, I thought it would be perfect!

And I was right!

An added bonus was that the kids helped me baked this cake and we had a lot of fun doing it too!  It’s not a very ‘rise-able’ cake, so don’t expect it to be all fluffy, but it’s like this delicious dessert that’s not too sweet, but yet is good enough to make you want more.  Tastes a little like nyonya kueh, if you ask me.  Try it if you prefer your cakes sans frosting, or if you just like pineapples! 🙂

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake (source)

Ingredients:

  • butter (for greasing)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 slices canned pineapple in juice (plus 3 tablespoons of the juice)
  • 11 glace cherries (approx. 75g total weight)
  • 100 grams plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 100 grams soft butter
  • 100 grams caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6/400ºF. Butter a tarte Tatin tin (24cm/9 inches wide at the top and 20cm/8 inches diameter at the bottom) or use a 23cm / 8-9 inch cake tin (neither loose-bottomed nor springform).
  2. Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of sugar on top of the buttered base, and then arrange the pineapple slices to make a circular pattern as in the picture.
  3. Fill each pineapple ring with a glace cherry, and then dot one in each of the spaces in between.
  4. Put the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, butter, caster sugar and eggs into a food processor and run the motor until the batter is smooth. Then pour in the 3 tablespoons of pineapple juice to thin it a little.
  5. Pour this mixture carefully over the cherry-studded pineapple rings; it will only just cover it, so spread it out gently.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, then ease a spatula around the edge of the tin, place a plate on top and, with one deft – ha! – move, turn it upside-down.

I Miss My Washer.

It has been exactly FIVE days ago that my washer decided to stop functioning all of a sudden.  With no prior warning, I had put a load of clothes into the washer last Tuesday and poured in the detergent, but no light came on the display.

A quick check with the manufacturer left me even more heartbroken when I found out that the warranty period had just ended last month!  I had no choice but to await the fate of my washer when the technician comes to check on it.

However, based on my description to the technician via phone, he told me the problem was probably a faulty PCB.  Even worse….he told me that there was currently NO STOCK of the said PCB in Penang and he would have to order it.

That would take a WHOLE WEEK.

A WHOLE WEEK of no washer to help me with the laundry.

Can you hear me screaming yet?

So yeah…when I came to, the reality of it all dawned upon me that I now had to do the laundry by hand for a week or so.  Brought back memories of university days and all that hooha but you know, during those days, it was just hand-washing for ONE person: myself.  Let me just tell you that it’s a totally new ball game with FIVE people in the house!

The laundry has begun to pile up all right.

I guess I’m just thankful I have a dryer.

I miss my washer so, and I can’t wait for it to come back to to my tired arms.

What’s In My Bag?

Hey peeps.  Yoohoo…I’m still here. 🙂

Today, I bring you a lighthearted and (hopefully) enjoyable post to read, just to start the week ahead with.  Who says Mondays have to be boring?

Hands up those of you who loves to sneak a peek into the bags of other people?

Me?  I’m guilty as charged!!  Hehe…so today’s post is inspired by Tine’s recent post, which I enjoyed reading tremendously.

So back to my bag…well, the one I am currently carrying anyway.  It’s a Coach Gallery Patent Tote in a gorgeous red hue, a Christmas present from hubby.  It was love at first sight when we saw it at the Coach store several months ago.  There were two sizes of this bag, but I chose the slightly smaller one, because I figured the larger one was way too huge for me. Plus I was trying to reduce the stuff I was carrying in my bag anyway.  It is monogrammed, yes, and although I am not one to like carrying monogrammed bags, this one was tastefully done and looked really chic.

Inside my bag:

  • A variety of reusable bags: Envirosax and Rume bags.  I use them mostly for grocery shopping each week (yes, I do use ALL of them).
  • My Canon point-and-shoot camera.  Yes, I can now use my iPhone for photos on the go, but habit has made me still lug around my trusty p&s.  Plus it’s not all that heavy.  And there’s also that history bit 🙂
  • Hand sanitizer in a foaming-pump bottle: an essential item when you’re always out and about with kids in tow.
  • Chewing Gum: to exercise face muscles and for fresh breath!
  • iPhone
  • House keys and car keys
  • Green Makeup Bag – one of the free bags from Clinique a long time ago.  It holds the most basic of basic makeup: lipstick, lip balm, mirror and a mini tube of Vaseline lotion for moisturizing my hands on the go.
  • Red leather Coach wallet
  • (Another) Red Coach wallet (that matches the red bag)
  • Black Coupon Organizer
  • Packs of tissue: I make it a point to carry at least 2 packs all the time.
  • Small black card organizer
  • Notebook and a couple of pens
  • Training chopsticks holders.  I got these from US and have them in my bag in case my kids need to use them at restaurants.
So what’s in YOUR bag?  Do share and let me know if you do, so that I can have a peek too! 😀

Learning Made Fun and Simple with Time4Learning

We started using Time4Learning about a month ago, and I really had no concrete expectations on how it would turn out to be or what it would offer.  As it is, we are still in the process of evaluating homeschooling resources and curriculum, so Time4Learning was one of the lesson tools we used during the past month.  We used it as a primary guideline for our curriculum.

Time4Learning is an online educational curriculum that uses a US-based curriculum, and it was perfect for us at this point in time, as my kids were used to the US school curriculum, having just returned from Stateside.  The core subjects that were made available (at least up to 2nd and 3rd Grade level which we signed up for) were Language Arts, Language Arts Extensions (which included some stories, with reading and comprehension), Math, Social Studies and Science.

I set up an account for both my kids, and I thought it was pretty awesome that each kid had their own individual login and password, which gave me the opportunity to teach them a little about logging in to their account and also how important having and keeping a password was.  My kids found it cool to log into their own accounts on their own.

I also liked that they had a separate parent login section where as a parent/mentor, there was an Activity Scheduler where we could plan the lesson schedule for a particular duration.  This would serve as a guideline for the child if you wanted to.  Initially I wanted to use this, but my kid eventually chose to learn whatever interested him more, so we hardly used the Activity Scheduler.

Using Time4Learning came naturally to my kids and they were really fascinated with the graphics and interesting lessons that were assigned to them.  It was very interactive, and that I suppose, is a plus point when it comes to learning on the computer.  Almost 90% of the lessons are computer-based though, with some additional activity worksheets requiring printing out and working on.  There were also several games/activities that we enjoyed doing too.

I also appreciated the fact that when a child is signed up for a particular grade level, he/she also has access to one grade level above and below the one currently signed up for.  This allows concurrent transition to another grade if necessary.  In the case of my son who completed the Social Studies and Science curriculum for 2nd Grade, but he was still doing the Language Arts and Math in 2nd Grade, he could also proceed with 3rd Grade Social Studies and Science.

While animated graphics were used primarily in lessons from Pre-K through 2nd Grade, I noticed that 3rd Grade lessons are transitioned into more individual verbose reading and learning, without so much animation.  However, lessons were still kept straightforward and clean to get the point across and not bore the student.  As a parent/mentor, I have also enjoyed the time spent with my kids teaching and learning at the same time.  Although my son was able to independently navigate through the lesson sequences by himself, I sometimes prefer to walk it through with him and reinforce the lessons learnt at the same time.  If we’d wanted to learn more about a particular topic, we would then look it up further on our own.

Well, we did run into several problems throughout the month though.  There were some links that did not work properly, but thankfully the support team at Time4Learning was awesome, and the problem was fixed in a jiffy.

As for record-keeping, the parent portal on Time4Learning allows reports to be printed detailing the child’s progress and performance.  Parents can customize the reports to be printed by subject, by activity, or by timeframe.  I would have loved it if the creative writing assignments could be recorded in the reports too, but unfortunately that feature is not available at the moment.

On the whole, it was a brand new and exciting learning experience for my kids, using Time4Learning.  I would recommend supplementing with additional resources for topics that a child is interested in.  Time4Learning can be used solely as a homeschooling curriculum, and it’s flexible in that anyone can start using it at any point in the year, and also at a relatively reasonable monthly fee, you can set up your account almost instantly.  What’s great is that there are no contracts with Time4Learning, which means you can stop using it at anytime you want.  At the point of writing, the monthly fee per child is $19.95 and $14.95 for each additional child.

Time4Learning is perfect for children who love to use the computer.  They would treat the sessions as entertainment, but in reality they are really learning something.  The lessons are taught in an engaging manner and there are tests and assessments to ensure the students are on the right track.  Another cool feature is the Playground feature, where the student can “take a break” or “have recess” by visiting the Playground area to access educational activities like puzzles and games.  As a parent, we can set the allowable Playground time, and also the minimum time spent on lessons before the child can access the Playground area.  For instance, we can set it such that the child has to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on lessons before the Playground area is activated.

At the end of the day, I asked my son if he was happy with learning using Time4Learning.  He gave an affirmative answer, and that’s all that matters, no?

[stextbox id=”info”]

Pros:

  • Individual logins for each child, offering a more personalized experience.
  • Reasonable monthly rates, with no contracts and ability to terminate account at any time.
  • Activity schedulers can provide a detailed lesson plan to aid with teaching.
  • Interesting animation and graphics keep kids entertained while learning.
  • Complete curriculum that is structured and well-planned.

Cons:

  • 90% of learning is done via computer, so if that’s not your cup of tea, this might not work for you.
  • Links that do not work should be rectified.
  • Needs supplementing with additional resources if more information is required.
