Rays of Hope

sunrise

I captured the picture of a beautiful sunrise today, the sun’s rays streaming through the clouds onto the calm sea below.  A sight like this could not foretell what the day held and certainly was not able to tell me that it would be a wet and rainy day.

Don’t you ever wonder how everything in the world comes together every day without us knowing what is going to happen next?  Just trusting and believing and letting be.  Because we know we want to.  And we have to.

With our hearts full of faith and our heads full of dreams, we took that one crucial step.  Never ever looking back again in regret, but looking to the future with hope…weathering it together come what may.

Double-Yolked Happiness

2yolk3

My Mum ordered a batch of double-yolked salted duck eggs and gave 2 of them to me.  This was the second time I’m cracking open an egg with 2 yolks.  The first time was a few months ago and it was a surprise as I didn’t expect it.  I cracked open a chicken egg and was surprised to see two yolks in it.

This time round, it’s a duck egg.  A salted duck egg.

I couldn’t use the duck egg to make char koay teow because it is salted duck’s egg as opposed to a regular duck’s egg, so I decided to make a simple dish of steamed minced pork with eggs instead.

See the 2 yolks in the duck egg in the top left?  Compare that to the 2 chicken eggs in the other bowl.

I had to cut the yolk up into several small pieces before placing them in the steaming dish with the minced pork.

I was worried my kids would not like this dish, but they did! Yay!  It goes really well with rice 🙂

Have you seen an egg with 2 yolks before?  Apparently the ducks were bred to lay these double-yolked eggs.  Not sure how they could guarantee its occurrence though.

Why I Wash My Hair Daily

shampoo

The freaky coincidence that happened this morning is definitely a sign that made me force myself to finish this draft before anything else.  I had this draft prepared a few weeks ago, with the full intention of working on it *when I had the time*.

But this morning, when I saw My Women Stuff’s email notification of the latest post entitled “Do You Wash Your Hair Everyday?”, I knew it was meant to be that I had to do this now.

So, in answer to that question, a BIG resounding YES!  I wash my hair daily.  I can remember, however, a few days when I did not.  One of those days were during a school play when the hairstylists did up my hair in two buns, making me look like Chun Li from Streetfighter.  Yeah, I kid you not.  Anyway, I was given strict instructions NOT to wash my hair and hence I had to suffer with that stiff horrible hairdo overnight. Uggh.

But other than that, I make it my priority to wash my hair daily.  And I wash it at night, unlike some who wash it in the morning.  I like the thought of clean hair on my pillow..yeah, it makes me sleep better.  My rationale for washing my hair daily is that if I bathe every day (at least twice!), why shouldn’t my hair get the same treatment?  I shampoo and condition every day and I try to apply a hair mask once a week.  I look for shampoos suited for daily use though.

One thing to note though: I do not blow dry my hair every day.  I allow it to dry naturally.

What about you?  Are you like me, or do you have a different routine for your hair care?

Food Waste Friday: 5 Jars and a Bar

Today (and hopefully every Friday), I’m joining The Frugal Girl and other bloggers out there in posting my food waste photos within the past week, calling it Food Waste Friday.  It is hoped that by sharing pictures of the food I have wasted, it would motivate me to reduce wastage as much as possible.  I will try my very best to participate each week, and hopefully there will be weeks where I will be able to happily report that there was 0% wastage! 🙂

foodwaste-jars

Uggh…I’m so ashamed of what I’ve thrown away from my fridge this week.  Hidden way behind my fridge in the top shelf, I found 4 jars of baby food (unopened and expired), half a jar of sandwich spread and (horrors!!) one whole bar of chocolate (unopened and expired).

On hindsight, I didn’t actually *buy* the baby food.  It was given to us in the airplane when we came back from our US relocation trip.  My kids refuse to eat commercialized baby food like those, and I’ve given up trying to feed it to them.  I actually forgot all about those jars.  But now they’re no good anyway…darn.  I did find one jar that had not gone past expiry yet, so I might use that in my cooking one of these days 🙂

The sandwich spread…oh, I think I bought that sometime last Christmas to make sandwiches with the turkey breast leftover I had.

And the chocolate?  Sad to see it go but we’re not really ALL that into chocolate anyway.  We should have given that away to someone earlier on, instead of having it hidden way behind the fridge.

A really bad week in terms of food waste.  Boo.

Seven Things You Might Want to Know About Me…Or Not

Well, it’s a Friday, and I’m in a sharing mood today.  So since you read my blog and my writings, I thought it a good time to share several random things you might want to know about me.  Not that I’m narcissistic or anything, but in the spirit of sharing and since I’m in the mood…here we go:

  1. I love watching Master Chef and Top Chef.  And drooling over the food they cook.  Sometimes it makes me get hungry at unearthly hours in the morning, but hey, it’s all worth it.
  2. I have never owned an eyeshadow brush (gasp!), but that does not mean I do not want to own one.
  3. I try to use eco friendly products where possible, and I am glad my son is actually actively promoting that too.  Just the other day, I unconsciously brought my groceries in a plastic bag, and he gasped, ” Mommy!!!  That’s not good for the earth!  The earth will get sick!  We should use reusable bags instead”.  Good job, Ethan! 🙂
  4. As far as possible, I try to ensure that whatever products that go on my face and body are NOT tested on animals.  I cannot bear to think that some animal had suffered or died while in the process of testing the product I am using.  I would not be able to live with myself.
  5. I will never put any animal placenta on my face or body.  So all those ads that promote them, just back off.
  6. I’ve forgotten how to sew using a sewing machine.  My Mum once taught me how about 10 years or so ago, but I’ve forgotten.
  7. I’m secretly hoping someone would give me a hair makeover. Okay, so it’s not a secret anymore.
