Tickets for our Date in July

liverpoolasiatourtix

Wheee!!!  We are SO looking forward to watching Liverpool play on Malaysian soil next month, in the Liverpool Asia Tour 2011.  By a stroke of blessing, I discovered on Father’s Day that the sold-out-on-first-day-tickets-were-released-for-sale RM108 tickets were still available for sale, and promptly placed an order.

The tickets arrived today via courier, and they are sitting safely on my shelf.  🙂

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to perfect my rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone…

Bringing Sexy Back? Not exactly…

sexypageant

All you people take note!  There will soon be a group of girls parading in a very HOT contest to be held in one of the most popular shopping malls in Penang.  These girls would all be vying to win the title of the Sexiest and Hottest of the lot.  Heaven knows to what extent they will all go to to be crowned the sexiest one of all (apparently attire and makeup are up to the contestants)!  Girls dressed to kill in high heels and clothes which leave nothing to the imagination, swishing their luxurious locks of hair in front of judges…it’s gonna be a sight to behold for sure!

But beware…there could be potential rapists lurking around too.  Remember?  Apparently some “primitive” folk feel that men who cannot withhold their testosterony urges when they see a woman dressing sexily and will then be tempted to act on those urges because those girls are supposedly “asking for it”…  Heh.

Needless to say, the very obvious dress code for this contest would be to dress up alluringly (short skirt, cleavage-revealing, figure hugging clothes), it would be interesting if some contestants actually choose to be understatedly sexy.  You know, women can be sexy even in regular office attire 🙂  But how many would choose this route?  I dare say…NONE.

Also, has it occurred to you that the level of a woman’s sexiness can be gauged by how she speaks, not just how she dresses and walks?

Don’t think this contest is about all that though.

Why a contest like this had been approved in the first place is beyond me.  The shopping mall that is running this contest must have been really desperate to attract attention, and as we all know, sex does sell.  Apparently, this is not the first time this contest is being run either.  It’s also a gender-biased contest, in my opinion.  The rules and regulations state that only FEMALE contestants are allowed.  But guys CAN be sexy too, right?  Why can’t the contest include guys so it’s an even OBJECTIFYING field, where guys can ogle at sexy girls and girls can ogle at sexy guys?

Why not?

…or maybe for a shot at the grand prize of RM1500, the contestants are willing to be sexually objectified.

Homemade Seaweed Soup

seaweedsoup1

Yesterday, I decided to try my hand at making seaweed soup.  I managed to buy a pack of  seaweed from the organic shop, and I discovered that with this pack I didn’t need to wash it at all before cooking.  It would be my first attempt at making this soup and I was excited to see how it would turn out.

These are most of the ingredients I used for the soup.  I like preparing it because it’s a no-brainer: just dump everything in and you’re good to go!

Closeup of the seaweed…it doesn’t look too appetizing when it’s not cooked in the soup eh?  Seaweed is supposedly high in protein 🙂

The beauty about this homemade soup is that you can customize it however you want.  You could add crabsticks, eggs, meat slices, ginger slices and still, it would taste good.

My hubby was feeling under the weather yesterday, so I decided to make him some mee suah, and poured this seaweed soup over it.  I used organic pumpkin seed brown rice mee suah, so the dish was delicious as well as nutritious! 🙂

Have you tried making seaweed soup at home, and what other ingredients have you used?  My kids LOVED the fish balls and meat balls, but they didn’t quite like the seaweed…it’s an acquired taste, I’d say. 🙂

Here’s my recipe for Homemade Seaweed Soup:

Ingredients

  • Minced pork (marinaded with soy sauce and a dash of sesame seed oil; optional: pepper & corn flour)
  • Fish balls
  • Meat balls
  • Sliced shiitake mushrooms
  • Sliced carrots
  • Sliced tofu (I used Japanese tofu, but you could also use the regular tofu, i.e. the kind we use for steaming)
  • Dried seaweed, cut/shred into pieces.
  • About 3 big soup bowls of water.
  • Salt to taste
  • Soup stock (I just used some vegetable soup stock, but you could also make your own chicken/prawn stock)
  • Spring onions, chopped.

Method

  1. Bring soup stock and water to boil in a large pot.
  2. Lower the flame to medium.  Using a teaspoon, form minced pork balls with the marinaded pork and gently put each into the boiling soup.  Allow the minced pork balls to float to the surface, then lower the flame to simmer.
  3. Put in all the other ingredients: fish balls, meat balls, mushrooms, carrots.  You can put in the tofu and seaweed last of all.
  4. Cover the pot and simmer slowly for about 10 minutes.
  5. Add salt to taste, dish out and serve hot!
  6. If using egg, beat the egg and pour slowly into the soup immediately before serving.
  7. If serving with noodles/meehoon/meesuah, then cook the noodles separately, drain it out and pour the seaweed soup over it.
  8. Garnish with chopped spring onions.

What’s the secret?

Pretend Phone Call

I received a phone call from a consultant from a reputable fitness center a couple of days ago.  I had filled out their online form to request for more details and they were merely returning my call.

After the usual questions and offers of free fat analysis etc, I asked him if he could share what the membership fee was.

Consultant: Ma’am, why don’t you come over to our center and I can then share with you details on the membership fee?

Me: Why can’t you just let me know briefly what the fees are like right now?

Consultant: Because it’s better if I explain it to you in person.

Me: Okay, but before we do that, can you at least tell me how much the monthly fee is?  I’m specifically interested in the weekday-only rates.

Consultant: I’m sorry, Ma’am , but I can’t do that over the phone.

Me: What?! Why not?

Consultant: Because the conversation is recorded.

Me: Okay. Well, no problem.  I don’t mind my voice being recorded.  Go ahead.

Consultant: I’m sorry we can’t do that. Why don’t you come over and we can discuss?

Me: It doesn’t make any sense why you can’t tell me the prices over the phone.  It’s not a secret.

Consultant: It’s our company’s policy.

Me: Well it doesn’t make any sense to me. Okay then, I’ll call if I’m interested.  Bye.

Does anyone know the REAL reason why they could not divulge the prices over the phone?

Regret has no Rewind Button

regret-rewind

The little girl lays peacefully on the bed of cold tarmac

The ruby red pillow cradling her head

With her eyes still closed, she sucks the blood slowly back into her mouth

Now her shattered legs become whole

The shards of glass embedded in them fly out like crystal butterflies

and become your headlights once more

And now she’s a broken ballerina

twirling and twisting in mid air

She leaps up gracefully from the road

and travels five, four meters and lands on her two feet

Her scattered schoolbooks falling safely back into her satchel

The sudden fear in her eyes fade

and as you stop and she crosses safely, she smiles at you

Almost as if you haven’t killed her

Regret has no rewind button

If you respect life, respect speed limits.

Sometimes a message conveyed with just words, without any visual aids is more powerful than a TV commercial.  I’ve been awestruck by this poignant community message that has been regularly aired on FlyFM for the past two weeks or so, which speaks of regret in such a straightforward manner, it’s hard to ignore.

I’m looking forward to many more similar and meaningful community service messages in future.
