Sweet, Delicious and Absolutely Sinful

My husband and I really love nyonya food, but doesn’t everybody, now?  And on top of that love, we, of course, always reserve a special place in our tummies for the sinfully rich and sweet nyonya desserts that completes every nyonya meal.

Everybody has their favorite nyonya dessert.  Some swear by the colorful bubur cha cha, some totally adore the sago pudding.  For me, it’s definitely hands-down the thick black glutinous rice porridge, otherwise fondly known as bee koh moy in Hokkien.

 beekomoi

I picked up a packet of the black glutinous rice in Pekan Rabu, Alor Star a few weeks back at the amazingly cheap price of RM2.50 each (actually it was RM5 for 2), with the intention of attempting to cook this dessert, but only got to it yesterday.

The daun pandan was imported from Ipoh; my parents brought it from their own daun pandan plant when they visited last week.  So we had bee koh moy for dessert last night, with some left over for today 🙂

Here’s my recipe for bee koh moy, surprisingly easy to make! 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 1 packet of black glutinous rice (I bought mine from Pekan Rabu), should be about 2 cups.
  • Enough water to cook (I used about the same amount of water to cook porridge)
  • 3-5 screwpine leaves (daun pandan), knotted
  • Sugar to taste (I used about 6 – 7 heaping teaspoons)
  • Dried longan, rinsed and soaked for 30 minutes
  • Coconut milk
  • 1 tsp of salt added to the Coconut milk and mixed well

Method:

  1. Wash and rinse the black glutinous rice well, till water is clear.
  2. Put rice into slow cooker and add sufficient water to cover the rice, as if you were cooking porridge.  You can use a regular cooking pot and cook over the stove too, but you’d have to frequently check that the bee koh moy doesn’t run out of water and burn.
  3. Place knotted daun pandan into the slow cooker, and cook on AUTO for at least 5 hours.
  4. Add the sugar and stir.  Add more or less sugar according to taste preference.
  5. Add the longan and cook for 1 hour.
  6. Serve bee koh moy  with salted coconut milk.

I didn’t know the *trick* was to use salted coconut milk, till I read about it in recipes.  That certainly added to the sinfulness of this dessert.

Being a Parent

Being a parent is the toughest job in the world.  Besides requiring a lot of patience and tolerance, a parent is expected to possess the ability to level with a child, and sometimes to outwit and outsmart a 4-foot tall toddler who has the perfect comeback to anything you say.  The job expectation of a parent is that he or she must be prepared, at all times, to clean up any kind of mess, to play any game the child wants to play, and must be ready to plant kisses anywhere at all, lest the little ones get hurt.

Of course, although money cannot buy everything, being somewhat financially sound does help heaps in the parenting role.  Providing the bare necessities like clothes, food and toys are just the tip of the iceberg.  As the kids grow older, parents might find themselves facing a reality check as to how to best provide for their loved ones.  Education plans for the kids, investment funds to secure a brighter future…these are just a start.  Some parents who are looking to move their family to a bigger home to fit an expanding family might also find themselves faced with terms like loan mortgage refinance, to begin with.

Most importantly though, at any time, all parents need to maintain excellent personal credit management.  It is the crucial step that keeps everything intact and in order.

However, at the end of the day, when we take one look at the little kids, and get hugs and kisses from them, we realize that hey, being a parent, however complicated and daunting it may seem, is really worthwhile after all!

My current Battle Hymn

battlehymn

Got this book last Friday.  I don’t think I can wait till Christmas even if I’d wanted to.

And the funniest thing is that *someone* beat me to reading it: my husband.  That’s the strangest thing ever, because if you know my husband well enough, he NEVER reads books; only newspapers and magazines.

Ah, but this is a very interesting book, and we’re halfway through now.  “I can’t put it down!” is a cliché, but I’m still gonna use it.

The Colors of the Rainbow

My son drew and colored a rainbow the other day.  I was very surprised he knew the order of the colors, but I then asked him why there were only 6 colors.

He said, “Mommy, I remembered the song Barney sang.  That’s how I know all the colors of the rainbow.”

And this is the song:

As you would have noticed, Barney sings of only 6 colors.  Indigo and Violet are conveniently combined to become Purple.  I can easily see the reason why Purple is in the equation, the catchy song being from a big purple dinosaur and all, but can you imagine kids all over the world thinking that there are only 6 colors in the rainbow?

Still…I can’t seem to get the music of that song out of my head.  Maybe I ought to modify that last bit so it says Indigo and Violet, eh?

I guess no one uses Richard Of York Gained Battle In Vain anymore huh?

Crazy Crunchy Good!

crunchy

Have you tasted this before?  It’s crunchy, slightly sweet…and VERY addictive.  It’s my yummy blast for my childhood past.  My Mum and Grandma used to get it for me from Alor Star when I was a little girl, and while I was making a short visit to the Pekan Rabu in Alor Star 2 days ago, I saw this being sold, and I knew I had to get it.

I don’t even know what it’s called, really…but it’s certainly yummy!  Ahhh….*bliss*
