A place to call a cookbook home

Over the years, I have amassed quite a number of cookbooks; some bought and some gifts.  Well, not a LOT like it will fill up a whole bookshelf, but roughly a stack.  In fact, I also have recipe clippings sitting somewhere in one of my notebooks, which I need to do something about.

I refer to these cookbooks once in a while, even though I know most recipes can be viewed online.  There’s just something special about looking at recipes and food pictures in a physical book rather than on the computer.

But my cookbooks had been stashed away with all my other books in the bookshelves.  Sometimes I had to rummage through heaps of books to get to the cookbook I was looking for.  Up until a few days ago, that is.

I’m in the mood for organizing things now, and when I recently cleared the topmost shelf of my kitchen cabinet, I decided that that space would be home for all my cookbooks.

It’s not a very tall shelf, so I was not able to place the books standing up.  And the fact that it’s not too tall, makes it hard to figure out what else I could store there.

I’m not even entirely sure if that’s the perfect place for my cookbooks, but it will have to do for now.  What do you think?  Hehe…and now I even have some space to get MORE cookbooks! Wheeeee!!!!!

How the cake was saved

This was the cake I baked for Hannah’s birthday do in KL:

But lemme tell you a secret…let’s just say the cake evolved through various stages during its creation.

First of all, silly me thought it would be a great idea to bake a cake and bring it all the way to KL for the celebration.  We were traveling on a Saturday and the birthday celebration was to be on Sunday.  So working backwards, I’d need to bake the cake on Friday, to ensure it stays as fresh as possible.

I then decided to make the Baby Bop fondant figurine on Wednesday night, to allow time to fix any last minute disasters.  I completed Baby Bop and placed it in an airtight container and put it straight into the fridge and went straight to bed.

BIG MISTAKE.

The next morning, while googling to find out how long fondant figurines can last after they have been created, I found out, to my horror, that we are NOT supposed to put completed fondant figurines in the fridge.  Neither are we supposed to place them in airtight containers.  Because of the differing temperatures, condensation will form, and the figurine will have a *melted* look.

When I took out the Baby Bop figurine from the fridge, it looked all right, but as soon as I left it out for a few minutes, it started looking *glossy*.  So I put it back in the fridge.  I didn’t know what to do and scoured the internet cake baking sites for advice.  I was told to leave the figurine out in room temperature and it should dry out again in a few hours.

I promptly took it out and left it uncovered.  But  it appeared to be melting.  Thinking it could be too humid, I then placed it in an air-conditioned room for a few hours.  Alas, the fondant did dry out, but the black parts had bled onto the green, creating a very melted, mascara-streaked Baby Bop.

That certainly would NOT do.

Mortified, I knew there was no way out but to redo the figurine.  And this time I made sure I did not put it in the fridge.

On Friday night, I put all three layers of the cake together with chocolate ganache, and proceeded to decorate it.  It was my first time covering the entire cake with fondant, and I soon discovered it’s not an easy task.  I ended up with some *holes* that needed patching, and thankfully I managed to patch it with a decorative *button*.  See the purple thingy at the side?

Because I could not keep fondant in the fridge, and the cake was fondant-covered, I had to leave it outside the fridge overnight.  And when we transported the cake, the fondant figurines had to be transported separately because the cake box would not close if the figurines were on top.  Such a lot of hassle, and at that point, I was kicking myself for having this idea of taking a cake all the way to KL.

Everything looked good to go then, but catastrophe struck again.  Before leaving for KL, we stopped for lunch at McDonald’s for about 20 minutes, leaving the cake in the car.  And when we returned, the hot sun had caused the top layer of the cake to slide off, breaking the side fondant layer!  After I had stopped screaming in shock and had calmed down a bit, I inspected the cake and thankfully the fondant on top with the wordings remained intact, and throughout our journey to KL, I was constantly checking the cake, and adjusting the layers to make sure they stay stacked up.

When we reached KL, the sides of the cake were completely ruined.  It looked like pieces of fondant torn up and stuck together on chocolate ganache.  Although I knew I was not supposed to refrigerate fondant, I was forced to put the cake into the fridge, to ensure the chocolate ganache could set and make the cake layers stay stacked up.

I then decided to get some ribbon to cover up the mess.  Unfortunately I could not get any purple ribbon (which was my preference), so I had to make do with whatever ribbons I could find.  That night, I got to work placing the ribbons around the cake, in an effort to hide the disaster.  And then back into the fridge the cake went.

The next day, right before the cake cutting, I took the cake out of the fridge and assembled the fondant figurines.  The pink shopping bag piece had experienced broken handles in transit, but the rest looked alright.

And the finished product, salvaged the best I could, looked like this:

It was an experience never to be forgotten 🙂

I can’t believe I made this cake!

Today is Ethan’s birthday.  He is five years old today.  How he got from being a wee babe in my arms to the boisterous, chatterbox full of energy now is beyond me.

Anyway, we decided to have a birthday celebration for him in school last Friday, with his classmates, and feeling a little bit adventurous this year, I decided to bake him a birthday cake.  Well, it was because I had inquired with several bakers on the price for the design Ethan wanted, and they quoted around RM180-RM250.  Being frugal, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make the cake myself.  Thankfully, the design Ethan wanted was not too complex to create.  After all, it was only for 22 kids, right?  No biggie… 😛

The customer (Ethan) had wanted a chocolate cake, with chocolate frosting, and he wanted Mickey Mouse’s face on the top of the cake.  Not a 3-D design, just a simple, 2-D design.  He wanted a round cake, not a cake in the shape of Mickey’s head, and he wanted the words in CHOCOLATE.  Do we sense a theme here?

Being paranoid, I decided to do a trial run of the cake beforehand.  I first used the recipe for the chocolate cupcakes I made, and attempted to fill the layers with the vanilla buttercream.  Nah…didn’t quite work, because the chocolate cupcakes did not call for any eggs.  And apparently for a pound cake, eggs are required to give it that FORM.

So then I bought a cake pre-mix, thinking that perhaps I could use that and just concentrate on the decorations instead.  While this was easy to make, the results were not satisfying at all.  The cake turned out rather dry and unappetizing.

Then I decided to try making the Love and Olive Oil’s Very Tall Chocolate Cake.  It was supposedly to die for, and the picture certainly made the cake look good.  It was my first time making cake in layers and also my first time making chocolate ganache.  Man, did my kitchen smell awesome… 🙂

My first attempt did not turn out too good, because I only had 2 9-inch pans and the cake’s recipe made 3 9-inch cakes.  So in an attempt to put the third cake into the oven, I hastily took out the hot cake from the pan to wash the cake pan.

Big mistake there.  The cake broke into 3 or 4 pieces.

In the end, I had to use the chocolate ganache to seal the cake layers together.  But taste-wise, it was excellent.

So I knew that was where I was going….and I started getting all the ingredients I needed.  For the real deal, I *knew* I had to cool the cakes COMPLETELY before removing them from the pans.

Ethan’s party was on a Friday, so on Wednesday I started baking the cake layers, and at night, I assembled them together .  Somehow, I ended up witrh 4 cake layers, so I used 3 for the birthday cake and the extra layer, I frosted it and cut some up for hubby’s friends at work.

On Thursday morning, I set to work with my fondant, decorating the cake in the way my boy wanted.  This took way longer than I had imagined, but the results were very gratifying.

So I had a really delicious chocolate cake, sinful to say the least, topped off with a Mickey Mouse face on the top, all according to the customer’s request.  Just seeing that look on Ethan’s face was enough to make me do it all over again.

And the cake?  Decadent is the word you’re looking for.  This was a recipe I would use again and again and again.  Mmmm-mmmm… 🙂

Love and Loot from the US of A

January is officially MY busiest time of the year!  Hubster got back from a business trip in the States almost two weeks ago, and here I am, posting an update only now.  A slacker, that’s what I am.

He was only away for a week, but still…the kids and I miss him a lot.  Of course, time passed quite fast, what with my parents around to keep the kids occupied 🙂

This time round, hubster went to the East Coast…yep, it’s still winter there in Massachusetts…check out the blanket of snow!

I would have LOVED being there.  Not that I’m a snow freak or anything like that, but I’d take cold weather as opposed to hot, anytime.  Minus the blizzard, of course.  Hubby told me there was a blizzard on one of the days he was there, so he was stuck in the hotel the whole day long.

But despite the fact that he was so busy the entire short trip, and it was freakin’ cold the entire time, hubster still managed to check off *most* of the items on the shopping list I so painstakingly compiled for him.  I added a small note version too, so he could easily put it in his wallet.  Ain’t I thoughtful? 🙂

 loot1

I had only wanted the Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Hand Therapy cream in the medium tube, but hubby bought the pump jar instead.  It was a good thing too, because it only cost USD15!  I was over the moon!  Did you know the same jar retails for RM145 here?!  ooo…errr…but hubby *complained* the Estee Lauder set I requested was too expensive… 😛

loot2

Games and goodies for the kids…they haven’t tired of them yet till today! 🙂

loot3

New shoes for the kids…Hannah’s shoes were only about USD7.90 per pair!  Seriously, kids’ shoes are WAY overpriced here in Malaysia!  Too bad he could not find that pair of FitFlops for me too, though… 😛

loot4

…and new clothes for everyone! Wheeeee!!!!

I also receive a little surprise…

loot5

Well, not exactly *little*, because the tote is quite large…good enough for me to dump all my stuff inside… Hee!!!  The design is from an older Coach line, the Gallery collection….back when Coach produced chic and classic styles, pre-Poppy-ish designs…. 🙂

loot6

I wonder if I maintain my *good behavior*…will I be surprised with a Birkin or a Kelly?  After all, there’s no such thing as *too many bags*, right?  A girl can only hope… 🙂

By the light of the silvery moon…

For the past few nights, we have been treated to a glorious view of the full moon from our balcony.  I mean, who’s to say this sight won’t take your breath away?

themoon

Look at how the bright beautiful moon casts an illuminating light on the sea below it.  Simply gorgeous!

Ethan, on the other hand, says, “Mommy, that looks like Mars!  Is that Mars?”

And I say, “Well, yes darling…it looks like Mars, except that Mars is red!” 🙂
