A Toast To 2014, and a Welcome To 2015!

Over the past 12 months, so many things have happened.  So many ups and downs, so many learning experiences and so many moments to cherish.  There were also “less than happy” moments, but the optimist in me chooses to brush those aside.

turkeypie

Here’s a customary quick rundown before we herald in the new year of 2015.

  • I made a firm friendship with a fellow stay-at-home-mom, with whom I found I had so many things in common.  Our kids get along so well together and our interests are so similar, it almost feels like we are sister soulmates.  You know who you are, and I cherish our friendship to no end.  Thank you for being there for me this year. *hugs*
  • I have learnt to manage taking care of 3 kids throughout the day.  Taking baby with me in and out of the house several times a day for school runs and other errands is a skill on its own.
  • This year, “life began for me”, or so that’s what most people have been led to believe.  I don’t yet know what the future holds, but I pray that it will be a launchpad for a successful future ahead.
  • I found a little hobby that I churned into my little home business.  With Petit Gems, I now can make accessories for my little girls and myself, while selling some of them off too.  Makes me so happy when friends tell me how much they love my creations.
  • I started on my little garden this year.  I have some plants in my roof garden, and a few more in the balcony.  I have only been successful thus far harvesting spring onions, screwpine leaves (daun pandan) and really really tiny carrots, but it’s a good start for a non-green-finger person like me.  My flowering plants have been doing well though.  Throughout the process of greening my fingers, I have learnt so many things from germinating seeds to making my own natural fertilisers to making my own natural insect repellents.  Awesome stuff.
  • I’d like to think that I have been making a conscious effort to eat more healthily.  Not necessarily organic produce though, because who knows how “organic” they are when you purchase them from the stores, yes?  I’ve been taking more fresh fruit (whole or in juices), more vegetables and cutting down on dairy and red meat when I can.
  • In the last quarter of the year, I found the cure for my eczema.  The products I took (and am still taking) are natural, healthy and safe, and rejuvenates and nourishes my body from within.  Expelling the toxins that are the root cause of my eczema problems in the first place, and thereafter regenerating fresh new cells to replace the old damaged ones.  The solution is so simple, and yet it took me so many years to discover it.  All I can say is I wished I had found these products sooner.
  • I’ve been making good use of my kitchen.  Wish I had more opportunities to do so, but perhaps in the coming year. I was deprived on some occasions by my painful eczema hands, but since that is a problem of the past, I hope to bake and cook more.
  • I learnt to look past failures and disappointments and use them as learning examples.
  • I learnt that not everyone I thought I could trust would return that same trust, and that sometimes even the mere stranger can be more responsible than someone I have known for years.
  • I learnt to live, love and sometimes to just let go.

For the coming year, my immediate goal and resolution is to cultivate more patience and tolerance, and try to make some time for myself.  And also, a bonus goal to be more frugal and save more.

Happy New Year 2015, folks!  Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!

Getting Organized With a Warranty and Manual Binder

I have no doubt in my mind that everyone would have amassed a considerably huge collection of manuals and warranties over the span of time.  Each time we purchase something, it invariably comes with at least one or two manuals or instruction booklets.  Where do you put all these manuals and documents?  If you don’t have a specific place for all these documents, don’t you think it’s a waste of time to search high and low for that warranty document or manual when you need it urgently?

I used to stack all the documents into a plastic basket and would sieve through them whenever I needed to look for information or warranty documents.  This process, while it looks and sounds good enough, became rather tedious as my collection of warranties and manuals kept on increasing.  In addition, because all the manuals and warranties were lumped together, I have to wade through a ton of documents before I got what I wanted.

So I was really happy when I stumbled on this fantastic idea on one (or more) of the organisational blogs I frequent.  The idea was complete genius and I wondered why I had not thought of it earlier.  It’s simple to implement, foolproof and a total dream for any OCD person. 🙂

Presenting…my very own Warranty & Manual Binder!

warranty1

I used a simple 3-ring binder and wrapped the front with gift wrap, just to jazz it up a little.  You could achieve the same effect with a 2-ring binder too.

Inside, I used these fantastic creations: the poly-bag pouches.  These are spacious bags that close shut with velcro, and can store a ton of documents.

warranty2

Most importantly, everything stays in the poly-bag pouch even when I move the binder around.  I got them from Amazon.com a couple of years ago, but I haven’t seen them in Malaysia though.  I suppose you could use similar-looking pouches and attach velcro to them if necessary.

I use one poly-bag pouch per category and I’ve decided on four main categories so far:

  • Kitchen
  • Gadgets
  • Furniture
  • Computer

warranty3

That’s what the colorful labels you see represent. 🙂 Can you tell I get so excited when I talk about colorful labels?

To label these pouches, I use theses colorful label tags.  They have a sticky portion which I can easily attach to the poly-bag pouches.

warranty4

This way, I can easily see and go to the correct category whenever I am looking for something.

So whenever I purchase something, I will first decide which category they fall under.  Then I will staple the purchase receipt to the warranty and drop it into the respective pouch.  If there are manuals for that product, they go in the pouch too.  With this system, I have gone from a haywire dump-everything-in-a-basket system to an organised binder system where I can sleep well, knowing that everything is where I need it to be should I need to locate it.

warranty5

The beauty of this system is also that I can easily add categories and readjust the pouches when or if I need to.  You can of course change the categories to suit your own needs.  I’ve used this system for two years now and have not looked back since.

Have you organised your warranties and manuals? 🙂

Looking Through with Kids’ Eyes

Applecrumby & Fish sent my kids an early Christmas present last week (Thank you!!).  As soon as the parcel was opened, the kids were super delighted to find out it was a set of Educational Insights Geosafari JR. Kidnoculars, or better known as the only binoculars specifically designed for kids.

kidnoculars1

See how cool it looks?

Even the packaging is designed for kids, I reckon, because I didn’t even need to help them take it out!  What’s awesome about these Kidnoculars is that it suits all three of my kids, and they are aged from 1 year old to 8 years old!  I especially like the enlarged focus-free eyepieces, which enables even toddlers to safely use them, without the risk of injury.

kidnoculars2

My kids very soon found other uses for these Kidnoculars though, all in the name of creativity:

  1. Enlarging words, pictures, whatever they could see.
  2. Enlarging people (and the fact that people look really funny with big heads)
  3. When viewing the TV with the Kidnoculars, the picture appears to be in 3D!
  4. Look through the other side of the Kidnoculars and you will see everything really small!
  5. It’s a very colorful toy and will brighten up the playroom!

Pssst!  Applecrumby & Fish is running a holiday sale now, with all items at 20% off (coupon code: HOLS20) including free pickup and a surprise gift.

Petit Gems – With My Own Two Hands

Several years ago, I took one of those career quizzes for the fun of it…you know, those that will inevitably tell you what sort of career you are most suited for, based on your answers to several quirky questions like “What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?”

Well anyway, the results I got showed that I would be most suited for a career involving my hands.  I remember clearly that the results gave examples like craft work, florist, etc.  Of course I didn’t think too much of it.  After all, at that time, I was already working as a IT consultant, doing project management and software engineering.

Fast forward a few years later, and my daughter is showing a keen interest on girlie stuff for the hair.  So I decided to try making them myself, just so I could customize them to her favorite colors.

prettyflowers

I soon found out that to make them myself, I could not stop at making just one or two!  And the raw material used had to be purchased in bulk too!  So I ended up with more than a few…haha.  Well that’s when some friends suggested I sell my handmade hair accessories.  So after weighing the pros and cons, I’ve decided to kickstart my small home business selling my handmade accessories.  The price of the items I am selling comprises the cost of the materials used and a little bit extra to cover the time I spent creating them, plus the countless times I would accidentally poke my fingers with the needle or burn my hands with hot glue. Haha.

label-petitgems

Anyway, I’m naming it Petit Gems.  It will start off as a Facebook page and Instagram page for now, but if the response is good, and I find more time on my hands, I will create a proper website for it.  I wanted to name it Little Gems at first, but apparently it is the name of a preschool in Penang.  Thanks to my hubby, he suggested adding some French flair to the name, so Petit Gems was born.  I’m incredibly proud that I even designed the logo myself! 🙂

I would truly appreciate it if you could check out my page and let me know what you think.  Oh, and if you really like what I have created, just simply click LIKE.  Thank you very much, and as the French would say, Merci beaucoup! 🙂

Delicious Homemade Graham Crackers

graham1

When my daughter had her early Christmas party and celebration before the end of the school year a couple of weeks ago, I made these graham crackers for her to bring along to share.  It was a spur of the moment decision, because I was searching for an easy recipe that did not have eggs (simply because I had run out of eggs).  I found the perfect recipe here.

Well, you know what they say … sometimes simple things turn out the best!  The kids were so in love with these cookies that they wanted to eat them non-stop!  I had to ration the cookies just so there would be enough to bring to school.

Graham crackers are meant to taste similar to digestive biscuits.  They are fulfilling, more-ish, and oh-so-good.  Mine were not very crispy, but had a slightly chewy texture.  And because these are homemade, I gave some to my little baby too, who happily munched on them!  The slightly chewy texture made it so easy for her to chew and swallow.

So anyway, just a couple of days ago, it was my son’s turn to request for some goodies for his class party, and he wanted these graham crackers too.  I decided to cut them into festive candy cane shapes.

These are so easy to make, and I promise you that your kids are going to love them!  And they are perfect for Christmas too!

Homemade Graham Crackers (adapted from Kitchen Simplicity)
(Yields about 38-40 regular sized cookies/crackers)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (I used whole wheat bread flour)
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¼ cup honey (I used maple syrup)
  • ¼ cup water

Directions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer add flours, sugar, salt, cinnamon and baking soda. Stir to combine (Speed 2 on the Kitchen Aid).
  2. Add butter and mix until the mixture has turned to coarse crumbs.graham3
  3. Add honey/maple syrup and water. Mix until incorporated and the dough is easily gathered into a ball.
  4. Using hands, shape dough into a flat disk.  I actually divided the dough into two and shaped it into 2 flat disks, about an inch thick.
  5. Wrap in cling wrap, and place in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
    graham4
  6. Removed from the fridge, and roll out the dough until about ½ inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes and sizes.
  7. Place crackers on a parchment lined baking sheet. Re-roll remaining dough until all of dough is used up.
  8. Bake at 350ºF (175ºC) for 15 minutes, until slightly darkened around edges.  They should be set but still slightly soft (they will harden as they cool). Remove crackers to a wire wrack to cool.
  9. Store in an airtight container for 1 week, or freeze for longer storage.
