Today (and hopefully every Friday), I’m joining The Frugal Girl and other bloggers out there in posting my food waste photos within the past week, calling it Food Waste Friday. It is hoped that by sharing pictures of the food I have wasted, it would motivate me to reduce wastage as much as possible. I will try my very best to participate each week, and hopefully there will be weeks where I will be able to happily report that there was 0% wastage! 🙂
This week, I am sad to report that we threw out 3 wholemeal sweet potato buns. To make things worse, these were preservative-free and tasted really good. Ouch. The reason why we did not finish them was because we had too many other things to eat in the house…that, and also because of the school holidays, we were out for a whole lot more than usual. To be fair, those 3 buns did look okay…not at all moldy, but because it had been 5 days since we bought them, I decided to err of the side of food safety.
The other item I threw out was a lone mandarin orange, which had been sitting in the fridge for goodness-knows-how-long. I did not want anyone to eat it because we all had a bout of sore throat and cough and mandarins were not good for that. In the end, it turned soft and lumpy.
How did you do this week?
I think this is a very good exercise, I am making a mental note to start doing this weekly as well. My results are not good this week, I have wasted a slice of apple turnover and a bunch of grapes 🙁 Will be working towards 0% wastage for the coming week. Thanks for the great reminder from this post!
The Giddy Tigress says: Goody! Will be looking forward to your Friday posts too! 🙂
This week was good – I threw nothing out. Here’s a secret – before any thing can go bad, I quickly put them in the freezer. You could have done that for the bread as well, then reheat using oven.
The Giddy Tigress says: Oh yeah…I forgot that food forgets their expiry date when put in the freezer 😛 Thanks for the excellent tip!
