Auctioning with a Twist

I’ve never attended an auction before but I’ve witnessed how it works on TV and in shopping malls.  Highest price wins right?  So the more money you have, the more likelihood you are of getting that piece of furniture or jewellery being auctioned.  So I was incredibly amazed when I discovered a site that did the reverse of this.  At bid4prizes, the lowest UNIQUE bid wins!  Finally!  A chance for me to get that beemer or the vacation I’ve always wanted, at a fraction of the cost!  The trick of course, is to bid the lowest possible price and it has to be a unique one too!  Hmmmm…..If I were to play, I would choose a price which is in the mid-range because I would guess that most people would bid a really really low price.  Not too high a price, because remember, the LOWEST UNIQUE bid wins!  Think about it, I could be driving off in a beemer for just a hundred bucks or less!  Wouldn’t that be sweet?  Don’t you wish you could be one of the winners?

Up, up, up and away….there goes my moolah…

Yesterday I found out that The Star now costs RM1.50 on Saturdays and Sundays.  No warnings or heads-up, I just found out when I went to get a copy.  I’m not sure if it’s because The Star contains more pages on weekends, but I know it won’t be long before the price of the weekday editions go up too.  Hmmmph! Perhaps it’s better we stick to surfing the internet for news…

And then I read that Astro will increase its subscription by 15% too!  This will mean approximately a RM15 price increase every month for the package I am currently subscribed to.  SIGH… all I hear is “Ka-Chingggg!!!!”

Huh? Did someone attribute the price hike to the increase in petrol prices (again)?

Does Media Independence exist?

I thought we were doing okay in the media independence arena, until I read the horrendous statistics in today’s papers.  Did you know that Malaysia is ranked 141st worldwide amongst 191 countries?  And guess who our closest competitors are…. Cambodia, Ivory Coast, Moldova, Bhutan.  This hardly equates press freedom.

And then to add more sulphuric acid to a gaping open wound, I logged into the internet today and discovered from Lilian and Paris that bloggers may need to be classified.  Huh? What’s the criteria for classification?  And why classify indeed?  According to our Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin, classification of bloggers as professionals and non-professionals will help people in general identify what sort of information to believe and what to ignore.  But why?  Isn’t it a feature of democracy to allow us to speak up and be heard?  People can then judge if what they read is justifiable or not.  And what if someone is classified non-professional?  Does that mean no one will go and read his blog?  I believe that every Malaysian is entitled to an opinion, whether it is right or wrong is another matter altogether, but then that will be open for discussion.

Most of the bloggers these days blog about personal stuff, and that includes personal opinions, mind you.  They blog about their kids, the food they eat, the places they visit, and yes along the way, they may ruffle some feathers.  But that is hardly a reason to classify us.  Let us bloggers write whatever we want.  And let’s allow Malaysians and everyone else (hey, some of us Malaysian bloggers have a foreign following too, yeah?) to make matured informed decisions themselves.  That’s what life is all about!  And that’s what makes for a multi-cultural nation.

Swipe It

A long, long time ago, owning a credit card was a status symbol.  It meant that you are “there”.  But nowadays, even a college student can own a credit card.  So what’s the big deal?

Some people feel that credit cards are a no-no, but in my opinion they are a necessity in today’s world.  Give me credit cards any day in place of lugging wads of cash around.  Credit cards make for safer shopping, PLUS the fun part is we get to collect rewards  and even cash back with every purchase (you don’t get any points for using cash).  Having said that, I must admit that my hubby and I too have been victims of credit card fraud.  When we were holidaying in Las Vegas, my hubby’s credit card was somehow cloned and used fraudulently.  Thankfully the bank was able to reverse the charges, no questions asked.

When one uses credit cards, it is essential though to NOT get carried away when paying for purchases.  I feel that the key is to settle your bills in full each month, because the interest charged could get incredibly high!  I frequently get calls from credit cards companies promoting their balance transfer deals, but they are of no interest to me.  I would firmly inform them that I settle my bills promptly in full each month.

Of course, when it comes to choosing which card to apply for, one is always spoilt for choice.  There are so many different factors to consider when you compare credit cards.  I would recommend choosing a credit card which offers annual fee waivers, better yet if the waiver is for life!  This way, you’d only be using the credit card for convenience, which is what it ought to be!

Back to Regulus for now…

Sigh…I logged in this morning and discovered that strangely enough there were no comments on my blog since yesterday.  Sensing something fishy was going on, I found out that when I applied the new theme, the commenting option somehow got disabled.  I have no idea how that happened since it worked fine on my development site, but for now, at least, I have reverted back to the trusty Regulus theme..
