The Royal Sovereign Laminator is an Awesome Addition to Any Home!

I remember years ago when I was little, I would bring cards, papers and photos to the stationery shop and have them laminated for a fee, maybe like RM1 or RM2 per item, depending on size.  The man would run it into a machine and produce glossy cards protecting my cards and papers, cards that I would wow over.

Oh yes.  I love laminated stuff.  How simple it was to make me happy. 🙂

Fast forward to the current, I still love laminated stuff, but I know it would be pricey to laminate them at the stores.  I had always wished I had a laminator at home, plus now, with three kids, it would certainly be helpful to have a laminator at my disposal.

So you could imagine how thrilled I was when Royal Sovereign very kindly provided me with one of their pouch laminators for consideration and review.  The item I was sent was the Royal Sovereign CS-923KT, which is the Royal Sovereign CS-923 9″ Pouch Laminator and SCR-002 Pouch Film Assortment 170 Pack Value Kit.

This value kit comprises the Royal Sovereign CS-923 9″ Pouch Laminator and a pouch film assortment kit, which comes in handy for laminating items.  The pouch film assortment includes: (100) 3 mil letter size, (30) 4 mil card size, (30) 4 mil business card size, (10) luggage tag size, and (1) 4 mil carrier.

My first impression of the pouch laminator was that it was so sleek and classy!  I love that it looks totally inconspicuous on the desk and is so unlike those HUGE and bulky laminators in the stores which I’d been to.  Its small footprint meant that this laminator fits nicely atop any desk or home office.  Would you believe that I can actually lift it with just one hand?  I don’t recommend doing it of course, but I’m just sayin’…..

The Royal Sovereign Laminator is able to laminate both hot and cold pouches from 3mil to 5mil in thickness.  Typical lamination is hot lamination, which is why the items that come out straight from the laminator is hot to the touch, but there is also something known as cold lamination, which I believe requires special cold laminating pouches.

Well, in true Mommy-style, the first thing I used this laminator for was to laminate word flash cards for my kids.  I was teaching my son Bahasa Malaysia words and my girl was going through some phonics, so I took the opportunity to make these cards for them to use.  I could have used individual laminating pouches for each of the cards, but I chose the economical way and placed a few cards into a letter-sized pouch instead.  I would then cut out each individual flash card when the laminating is done.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Our shipment from the States arrived three days ago.

Our initial, ideal thought-out plan was to clean up our condo to have enough space for all our stuff when the shipment arrives.  We know the place is going to be filled with LOTS of boxes and other items, and being the claustrophobic person that I am, it was not going to be a pretty sight.  Plus it was not exactly an empty condo in the first place anyway!

But as the days wore on, I found it increasingly hard to find time (and sometimes energy) to do a good job cleaning out stuff.  So when we were informed the shipment was to arrive the following day, the hubby and I did a quick once-over and managed somehow to make a considerable amount of space for the boxes that were coming in.  It wasn’t a lot of space so to speak, but at least we could “see some floor space”.

Still, when they movers came and unloaded everything, our house looked totally crowded!  We had to arrange and rearrange all the items and thanks to hubby’s extremely good organizing and arranging skills, we have a somewhat okay floor space now.  The walkways and halls aren’t completely easy to breeze through, but despite some weaving in and out, we can still move around.  We haven’t totally unpacked yet, but we’re working on it.

Anyway, one of the items we had shipped back from the States was our new television.  All this time in Penang, we had been using a new CRT from way back when.  With the new television coming in, we would certainly need to make space for it, and that would mean finding a new home for the CRT.

A quick check with my Mom and she confirmed her cabinet space in Ipoh would not fit our CRT, so on impulse I checked out Eden Handicap‘s website and called them up.  I did not want to just throw away our old television, because truth be told, it was still working fine.  The only thing was that it’s super heavy and of course, the picture clarity is that of a CRT’s.

(Eden is a charitable non-profit Christian-run organization, with a mission to give the disabled the dignity to lead self-sufficient lives in the sight of God.)

So anyway, I called up Eden Handicap’s Recycling Centre to inquire if they needed a television donated.  Well it was a good thing I did, because the lady on the phone told me that the televisions in one of the hostels just broke down the night before, and so my call came just in time!

Our other concern was transporting the super heavy CRT television from our house.  Our car certainly does not have the space to fit a television in it for transporting but thankfully Eden Recycling Centre provided that service too!  So later that day, two guys from Eden came over right to our doorstep and carted away our old television.   Easy peasy! 😀

I’m so pleased our television has been donated to a charitable cause, and that it is finding good use in a new home.  And now, our living room even looks a little more “breathable” with our new television, since it doesn’t take up as much space as the CRT.

…Plus…. can I just say that HD channels rock? 🙂

And HD FOOD channels (especially Food Network) rock big time!

A Brand New Start

Our return to Penang is akin to starting out all anew.

Yes, we are returning to our condo, and yes, after all those months away, we have a LOT of cleaning and decluttering to be done.  In fact, we dived straight into it when we touched down at the airport that evening.  We took two cabs home (because we had THAT much luggage) and started cleaning our home!  Thankfully Emma fell fast asleep for a few hours so we could do the deed.

But anyway, yes…as I was mentioning, there is a lot of cleaning, clearing away stuff and decluttering to be done here.  It is actually an ongoing process and one that I am trying my best to manage, what with three kids in tow now.

However…we are more than excited that we will be embarking on our next project really really soon.  Well, it’s actually a “project” that we’ve already started on last year, but it has been dormant up till now.

*takes deep breath*

We will be moving away to another house really soon!  Having three kids around has really proven that our condo has constraints in terms of space, so we’ve decided that we will be moving away, albeit with heavy hearts, because we do love our condo here.

Anyway, last week saw us having our electricity and water supply activated in our new place.  Last we checked, the electricity is already in place and we will be checking on the water supply this weekend.

You can see a bit of my reflection in this picture … hehe… The electricity meter shows 21 but it was zero when we’d arrived that day.  We tested the air-conditioning, you see. 🙂

Our housing developer had already provided us with kitchen cabinets, flooring and air-conditioning for the whole house, so when renovation commences, it will be hopefully just a few minor additions here and there.

It’s an exciting time for us as you can see, and we are looking forward to it.

I, for one, am looking forward to these things:

  • A spacious kitchen with LOTS of storage space!
  • Setting up and decorating the kids’ playroom!
  • A walk-in closet (which I am still in discussion with my *boss* to have more space in)
  • …stuff to be added to this list as time goes on…

Getting Reacquainted With Penang Food: The First Few Days

Hey peeps!  Yes, we made it back home!

After such a long-haul flight from US back to Malaysia, not to mention moving continents with 2 kids and a baby in tow, it’s amazing how we still have such a voracious appetite for food.  It helps that we have missed it in months, though, but here are some snippets of what we’ve been having in the past few days, while we battle our jet lag or whatever’s left of it.

White Curry Mee with Hainanese Chicken at Hot Bowl Nyonya Delights, Abu Sitee Lane:

Coconut Jelly from Joez Coconut:

On the second day after we’d arrived home, all of us fell fast asleep at about 5p.m. in the evening, all through the night.  Naturally we awoke early the next morning, at about 5:30a.m. -ish, which made it the perfect opportunity to have dim sum for breakfast!  It will probably be a LONG LONG while before we ever have dim sum as early as we did that day!

Here’s a glimpse of what we had at Maxim’s in Taman Pekaka:

Honey/Maple Oatmeal Bread: Homemade Yumminess

Please go to the end of this post for a special blog message.

There are three reasons why I made this bread.

Firstly, I didn’t want to be making milk loaves all the time.  I wanted variety, and I wanted to challenge myself and see what else my Kitchenaid and I could accomplish.

Secondly, I wanted to use up as many of our pantry ingredients as I could, because we would not be able to leave any perishables behind when we leave Massachusetts later this week.  I definitely did not want to fill my luggage with food items either.

And lastly, well,…who could resist a loaf of oatmeal bread?  It’s wholesome, it’s good…and when you throw in honey/maple syrup to the equation, you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

The question then was whether I could make this combination work in a bread form.  You can pretty much call this either honey or maple oatmeal bread, depending on what you use as your ingredients.  I used maple syrup because that’s what I had left in the pantry, but I might use honey some other time.  So mine’s Maple Oatmeal Bread…and it took me three attempts to perfect it. 🙂

Attempts 1 and 2 fell flat on the face, and emerged rock hard.  I am not sure if it was the temperature or the recipe’s fault, but this made me hunt down a new recipe for my third attempt.  I found one at Bakingdom, which was interesting because the recipe called for the use of an additional pan of freshly boiled water in the oven while the bread was baking.  According to the creator of this recipe, this step will produce humidity within the oven that helps develop the tender and chewy crust that is unique with this bread.  Almost everyone who tried baking the bread with this recipe yielded success, which was just the affirmation I needed.

Well, you know what?  I’m glad this recipe worked like a charm!  The bread was moist, though a little dense, but absolutely flavorful, just the way I like it.  Furthermore, oatmeal breads are usually on the “dense-r” side, and I simply love how the loaf looks!  I used half-n-half of whole wheat flour and unbleached bread flour in this recipe, but you can pretty much use any combination of suitable flour for the bread, even all-purpose flour!

This bread is just the right kind of wonderful and it tastes oh-so-heavenly with butter!  Mmmmmm….

Maple Oatmeal Bread
(~Makes 1 9×5 inch loaf: adapted from Bakingdom~)

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1½ cups unbleached bread flour
  • ¾ cups oats (I used instant, but according to the creator of the recipe old-fashioned oats work just as well)
  • 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast/active dry yeast (1 envelope)
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup (250 ml) milk (almond or soy milk for vegan/dairy free)
  • ¼ cup (62 ml) lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons (28 grams) unsalted butter or margarine
  • ¼ cup maple syrup (can be substituted with honey, or agave for vegan)
For the topping:
  • 1½ to 2 tablespoons maple syrup (can be substituted with honey, or agave for vegan), warmed
  • 1½ to 2 tablespoons oats
Directions
  1. In a large bowl, or the bowl of a standing mixer, combine the flour, oats, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small bowl, or two cup (450 ml) measuring cup, warm the milk so that it’s hot enough to melt the butter, but not boiling. Add the butter, stirring until melted, then stir in the water and honey.
  3. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, mixing with a dough hook until it just comes together to form a dough. Knead in the mixer, with the dough hook attachment, for 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic (if you’re making this recipe by hand, the dough will be very sticky at first; flour your hands and work surface generously and be patient). If the dough is still very wet and sticky after 5 minutes of kneading, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough is barely tacky. If the dough is too dry, add water, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) at a time, to soften it up.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and allow to rise until doubled, about ½ to 1 hour.
  5. Once doubled, place the dough on a clean, dry work surface. If the dough is too sticky, lightly flour the surface before continuing. With your fingers, flatten the dough into a 9 by 12-inch rectangle. Tightly roll the dough, tucking the ends as needed, into a loaf.
  6. Place the shaped dough into a 9×5-inch loaf pan, cover with a clean dry towel, and allow to rise until doubled, about ½ to 1 hour.
  7. Preheat oven to 350° F (180° C). Place an empty loaf pan or empty baking bowl/container on the bottom rack of the oven and bring 2 cups of water to a boil on the stove.
  8. When the loaf is doubled again, brush the top with the warmed honey and sprinkle with the oats.
  9. Place the bread in the oven and pour the boiling water into the empty loaf pan on the bottom rack of the oven. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until the bread is deep golden brown and the internal temperature is about 190 degrees.
  10. Transfer to a wire cooling rack and allow to cool completely before serving.

Try making this loaf of bread if you haven’t – you won’t regret it! 🙂

I will be taking a blog break for a week or two from today as we will be leaving Massachusetts for Penang at the end of this week.  We’ll need a few days to settle outstanding errands and get used to the hot and humid weather (haze begone!) back in Penang, … oh, and not to mention … getting re-acquainted with all the delicious food we’ve missed!

Take care, y’all!  See you real soon! 😀
