Indeed.

I came.  I saw.  (I almost backed out for fear of not being able to complete it, but) I conquered.

Hubby took the day off today, so after we dropped the kids off for the School Holiday Program for the morning part of the day, we decided to take a hike up Penang Hill, via the route we used to take way back when.

I would not have dared hike up if I had not been going to the gym quite regularly for the past month or so, but then again the prospect of going up again was too good to resist.

We decided that if we got too tired when we reached the halfway point (46), we would just turn around and head on down.  However, upon reaching 46, I decided I could still go on.  Could be the endorphins speaking, for all I knew.

So we went on and persevered.  The ground was a little damp due to the heavy downpour from last night, and the tar road from the halfway point onwards felt steeper than I had remembered.  I had to walk a little slower and more carefully too, because I had a slight pain in my knee (getting a knee guard/brace soon!).

Well anyways, after slightly less than an hour (which was a surprise to me!), we finally saw the hut at the 84 Restpoint, our destination!

A great way to start the day and week!  Now, who’s game for Round 2? 😀

Could Beauty Clinic’s Sensitive Sun Cream be the Sunscreen I have been looking for?

For the past few months, especially after my love-hate episode with one of my (ex)favorite sunscreens, I have been extra careful about what I put on my skin.  I know that I am allergic to homosalate, and with the recent findings from my skin allergy patch test, I now have to avoid lotions and cosmetics with isothiazolin too.

suncream1

Round about this time, I stumbled on a new product launched by the Korean manufacturer Beauty Clinic: the Sensitive Sun Cream.  Well, the actual product name for the sunscreen is Beauty Plan Mediheal Sensitive Sun Cream, and it contains cactus extract to calm and soothe irritated and sensitive skin, even for kids.  I had tried their Tea Tree Oil Mask and the Collagen Mask, and I was happy with the results.  One thing that was keeping me away from trying the Sensitive Sun Cream though was that the ingredients were not noted on the website itself.

However, the good people at Hansaegee Nature, the distributor of Beauty Clinic’s line of products, assured me that the Sensitive Sun Cream did not contain homosalate.  So I decided to give it a test drive.

Did I like it?

French Beans, Papaya, Ginger … but that’s not all…

markethaul

This, my dear friends, was my humble haul from the market early this morning.  It’s only a small haul today because I wanted to grab something fast to cook later.  So that, and some chicken…and I was about to make my quick getaway.

…except…when I was about to get the piece of ginger, I noticed a frail looking old lady in her housecoat trying to get something from one of the shelves.  The shelves were located on the outside of the market shop and there were some motorcycles parked right in front, obstructing the way.  You would have to squeeze between the motorcycles and make sure your legs don’t hit the exhaust pipes.

Anyway, the old lady seemed lost and troubled, so I asked her if she needed anything.  She said she wanted some red onions.  So I offered to squeeze through and chose some for her.

She was so grateful and kept saying what a good girl I am for being so kind. LOL…it has been a LONG time since someone told me I am a good girl!  She also told me she just came back from England and she just had an operation in Penang.  She didn’t want to aggravate her operation wound by squeezing here and there, potentially falling and getting hurt.

She thanked me again one more time as I gave her the bag of onions.  It was a mere five minutes of my time, but it sure meant a lot to that lady that day.

So that was my good deed for the day.  Simple, small but it certainly made me feel all warm inside.

Have you done your good deed for the day?  Or were you on the receiving end of a good deed today?

Skin Patch Test Update: Things I Should NOT Touch

allergyresults1

So today, I showed up at the doctor’s office bright and early to remove the rest of the skin patch stickers on my back, and get a report on what my skin is allergic to.  I was hoping to get it over with as fast as possible, and then head home for a much-needed shower especially on my back!

Unfortunately, it was a good one hour before my name was called and the doctor then proceeded to check my back for reactions to the allergens.

Some allergens which showed a positive reaction after 48 hours seem to have healed, but some had quite a clear reaction. There were even some “delayed irritant reactions” which did not show positive reactions on Wednesday, but looked inflamed today.  The doctor even mentioned some had “burnt marks”.  Sounds pretty scary, if you ask me.

From the 30 standard patch test substances which the doctor prepared from her lab/clinic for me to be tested on (generic list of standard patch test substances), it was very clear that I am allergic to:

  • Isothiazolin, a type of preservative found in cleaners, shampoos, cleansers, makeup etc.  They exist mostly in the form of Methylisothiazolinone or as an Isothiazolinone mix.  Isothiazoline produced a ++ reaction on my skin, i.e. a strong positive (see below for explanation on symbols of reactivity)
  • Cobalt, a type of metal found in some costume jewelry, tools, utensils, etc., even Vitamin B12 preparations for treating anemia!  According to the patch test, cobalt presented an uncertain reaction on my skin, which might mean a minor form of cobalt allergy.
  • Colophony, also known a rosin, has a vast range of uses in household products.  Colophony (rosin) is the sticky substance from pine and spruce trees and is used in many products such as adhesives, some cosmetics, shoe polish, etc.  My reaction to colophony is also uncertain, but there was definitely some red rashes on my skin.
  • Cetavlon, is an ingredient used in antiseptic lotions, creams etc.  The brand Savlon probably derived its name from Cetavlon.  My skin registered an irritant reaction (IR) with Cetavlon.  Doc says that means “I cannot be ‘too clean’!”, given that Cetavlon is an antiseptic.

According to wikipedia, irritant reactions (IR) include miliaria (sweat rash), follicular pustules and burn-like reactions. Uncertain reactions (+/-) refer to a pink area under the test chamber. Weak positives (+) are slightly elevated pink or red plaques, usually with mild vesiculation. Strong positives (++) are ‘papulovesicles’ and extreme reactions (+++) have spreading redness, severe itching and blisters or ulcers.

From the household detergents and cleaners I brought in from my home, (shocker!) I am allergic to ALL of them (including my rubber gloves):

  • Amway L.O.C. Multi-Purpose cleaner
  • Sunlight dishwashing detergent
  • Greenworks dishwashing detergent
  • Greenworks Multi-Purpose cleaner
  • Cosway cream cleanser for stainless steel surfaces
  • Dettol Hand Soap (!!!)
  • Rubber/latex gloves

However, the tests did not show a positive and/or irritant reaction to rubber gloves from the doctor’s office, although they were also made from latex.  So guess what I was prescribed?

These are powder-free however, and I hope they’d help protect my hands somewhat.  They are like the surgical gloves, so they are pretty thin though.  But then, that makes for easier handling of things.

Here are some of the products that I was tested as positively allergic to:

allergyresults3

A quick check on the ingredients showed the presence of Methylisothiazolinone in most of them.  In the case of Dettol hand soap, it was really an eye-opener, because my family uses this extensively in our household.  I wash my hands with this all the time, countless times a day; it’s no wonder my eczema keeps coming back again and again.

So as you can see, I desperately need a hand soap replacement.  Temporarily, I am using Cetaphil for myself, but that is rather pricey.  I was at a pharmacy last night looking at the ingredients on all the available hand soaps and all of them contained Methylisothiazolinone. 🙁

My dishwashing detergent also contains this substance (see yellow-highlighted ingredient) :

allergyresults4

So until I find a replacement which does not contain this substance, I will need to make do with gloves…assuming those gloves don’t give me a delayed rash 🙁

The skin allergy patch test was a long duration of 5 days to endure, and I am really glad that it’s over now.  I’m relieved and happy that I can shower normally now and I am applying some creams and lotions to the affected patches pronto.  More importantly though, I now know the allergens that are causing my eczema and will be more vigilant in avoiding the said substances.

Soupe Du Jour, S’il Vous Plaît

Today, I am going to share with you what I made for dinner tonight.  I had some carrots, onion, potatoes and broccoli, but instead of the *predictable* chicken ABC soup, I opted to try something different:  Cream of Carrot Soup and Cream of Broccoli Soup.

creamysoupdujour

A totally different taste, and I was surprised by how smooth the texture turned out to be!  Sort of reminded me of my puréeing days when the kids were about 6-8 months’ old. 🙂

Although, I would like to mention a caveat that these “Cream of xxx” soup recipes cannot and should not be used as baby’s first foods, although it’s of a similar consistency.  This is because it contains salt, pepper and other ingredients which baby might not have been introduced to yet.

I had a whole lot of fun making this soup and I know you will too!  You will find that both the soups have quite similar recipes, so you can probably reinvent other soups like “Cream of Pea Soup”, “Cream of Cauliflower Soup” or “Cream of Corn Soup”.  See?  It need not always be Cream of Mushroom Soup, you know…

Another PLUS about these soups is that my kids don’t know that the soup also has potatoes and onions and garlic in them…wholesome goodness 🙂

Cream of Carrot Soup

Ingredients

2 medium carrots, sliced thinly
½ yellow onion, chopped finely
½ potato, peeled and chopped into small cubes
1 tbsp butter
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 cups chicken broth/stock (or dissolve 1 cube chicken cube in 2 cups warm water)
salt and pepper to taste
50ml whipping cream

Directions

  1. Heat a soup pot and melt the butter in it.
  2. Stir-fry carrots, potatoes, onions and garlic for about 5 mins over medium heat
  3. Pour in chicken broth and simmer over low heat for about 30 mins.
  4. Leave to cool.
  5. Purée or blend entire soup contents until smooth consistency is achieved.
  6. Return blended soup to pot and stir in whipped cream, and some salt and pepper if desired.
  7. Simmer for a few minutes and serve hot!

Cream of Broccoli Soup

Ingredients

1 medium broccoli, florets and stems chopped
½ yellow onion, chopped finely
½ potato, peeled and chopped into small cubes
1 tbsp butter
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 cups chicken broth/stock (or dissolve 1 cube chicken cube in 2 cups warm water)
salt and pepper to taste
50ml whipping cream

Directions

  1. Heat a soup pot and melt the butter in it.
  2. Stir-fry onions and garlic for about 5 mins over medium heat.
  3. Add in potatoes and mix it with the melted butter.
  4. Pour in chicken broth and simmer over low heat for about 5 mins.
  5. Lastly pour in the broccoli and simmer for about 20-30 mins. (Broccoli is added in last because it cooks really fast)
  6. Leave to cool.
  7. Purée or blend entire soup contents until smooth consistency is achieved.
  8. Return blended soup to pot and stir in whipped cream, and some salt and pepper if desired.
  9. Simmer for a few minutes and serve hot!
