My Maiden Chainmaille Wonder

earrings-chainmaille

I’ve been intrigued with chainmaille jewelry and have had sweet contemplations of creating some of my own for a few months now, especially since I’ve been wearing one of Tine’s beautiful creations.

So here’s my first ever handmade chainmaille pair of earrings.  Took me a while to get the hang of creating the design, but once I started, it was really addictive!

It’s just a simple pair of earrings, but hopefully I will be able to venture into more *adventurous* stuff soon.

Liver on Bread

foiegras

What we ate: Foie Gras

What it is: Fattened liver, typically from a goose or a duck.  The foie gras that we had stated Foie Gras D’Oie, which meant that it was goose liver.

What it looked like: A light brownish block of soft spreadable mixture contained within the tin can.  Some oil could be seen around the block of foie gras.

Why I did it: I only ate the foie gras out of curiosity because after all, I had seen the chefs on Iron Chef cooking this, and people have raved about how delectable foie gras tastes.  While foie gras is deemed as “luxury food”, I was a little apprehensive to try it too, because of the controversial issue on how it is made.

How we ate it: We spread it straight onto slices of French baguette, just like spreading butter.

What it tasted like: It tasted like ham and had a livery aftertaste to it.  In a way, it tasted a little bit like liver butter, if there’s anything like that.

Verdict: Nothing spectacular, and I don’t think I would really go out of the way just to eat it again.  Not something I would naturally crave for.  I’m still very much the butter and kaya kinda gal.

Have you tasted this delicacy and do you have any other suggestions on how to eat it? (I still have some left over and I am wondering what to do with it)

Have I really??

mcds

We are considered regulars at a certain McDonald’s outlet, and because of this, one of the store supervisors knows us very well.  Actually I would say she probably looks forward to seeing the kids more …

Anyway, I was ordering some food the other day when she saw me and this conversation ensued:

Supervisor: I tengok you makin lama makin kurus…you makan apa?
(Translation: You’re getting thinner and thinner, what do you eat?

Me (without skipping a beat): Makan McDonald’s laa!
(Translation: I eat McDonald’s!)

Supervisor: Eh?  Orang makan McDonald’s jadi gemuk.  You terbalik pulak!
(Translation: Hey, most people grow fat if they take too much McDonald’s.  How come it’s the opposite with you?)

Sushi Too Little Too Late

I’m officially boycotting Sushi King.  Oh, not ALL the Sushi King outlets.  Just the one in Queensbay Mall.

I was there for lunch just a few days ago and I brought my son along with me.  The place was really packed, but thankfully we got a nice place by the kaiten belt.  It was 12:30p.m.

We ordered a kiddie set for my son and I ate some stuff from the kaiten belt.

At 1:00p.m., after a LONG wait of 30 minutes, my son’s meal had NOT arrived yet.  So I asked Waiter #1 to check if it was ready, since we had ordered it a while ago.

He went into the kitchen and came back to inform me that it would take another 2 minutes.  Not too bad, we thought.  So we kept on waiting.

A few minutes later, Waiter #2 brought us the meal.  Alas, our joy was diminished because we saw that the chawan mushi was missing.  Waiter #2 then told me that the chawan mushi was still being steamed and it would take a further 5 minutes, according to the chef.  I asked her to try to ask the chef to hurry, because my son loved the rice WITH the chawan mushi.

Anyway, we started eating the meal without the chawan mushi, although it did not taste good that way.

After 5 minutes, there was still no sign of chawan mushi being served.  I then motioned for the store manager to come and asked him to check with the kitchen when the chawan mushi would be ready.

He came back and told us that it would take another TEN MINUTES.  Well, that was when I totally lost it.  It was already 1:20p.m., and we had been in the restaurant for close to an hour.  My son was starving and the store manager tells me it would NOW take another TEN MINUTES?

I told him it was totally unacceptable.  I explained to him that 5 minutes ago, his staff had just told me it would take another 5 minutes and now he tells me it would take a further 10 minutes??!!  Come on…I know how long it takes to steam chawan mushi.  You can’t lie to me…

In any case, after I had voiced my displeasure and my son had indicated in a LOUD voice that he was SO HUNGRY, the store manager didn’t even apologize.  But the chawan mushi came after about 3 minutes.  I checked to see that it was cooked before giving it to my son.

You know it’s ironic that they had this sign on the table, with a list of do’s and don’ts and precautions…

I just thought they ought to have included: CAUTION – Long wait ahead.  Order at your own risk!

We quickly finished our lunch and left the restaurant.  Well, even settling the bill was a chore.  We, as well as a few other patrons, were made to wait for the cashier to arrive…seriously!!

Never again are we returning to the Sushi King at Queensbay Mall.

It was a completely different experience though the next day when we dined at Sakae Sushi Queensbay Mall.  The place was jampacked, and as I braced myself for a long wait, our food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering.  It was piping hot and tasted absolutely delicious.  Totally impressive!

Now THAT’s what I call service and that certainly warrants a return visit! 🙂

Halloween Scare-a-bration done in bad taste

Last night we were out for dinner at e-Gate in Penang.  After our dinner, we took a walk to the nearby pharmacy.  We were just about to leave the pharmacy when my son announced that he had to do a number two.  So we hurriedly rushed to the nearest loo.

The public toilet at e-Gate is very badly ventilated, so I kept the cubicle door open while I stood in the doorway waiting for my son.

Suddenly two people entered the toilet and stood a few feet behind me.  I paid very little attention to them, until I saw my son’s face turned to shock when he saw them.

I immediately turned round, and what I saw was two women, clad in dark greyish pants and shirt, with their faces made up like bloodied ghosts or zombies.  They put on grey makeup all over their faces and black eyeliner for their eyes.  They used lipstick liberally to denote blood.  To top things off, both of these women had long flowing hair.

And they were just plain standing there, waving at my son.

GOSH.

I very nearly screamed my head off at them.  But I managed to compose myself and said, “Can you PLEASE not show your face to a young child?  Do you know how scary you look?”

They did not apologize at all.  One of them entered one of the cubicles and the other waited outside.

But because of what I said, she turned her face to the wall.

That’s not actually making things better, because just imagine walking into some dimly lit toilet, and the someone turns around and lo and behold, you see someone as gruesome as that.  In fact, another lady came into the toilet and I saw her jump when she saw that zombie woman there.

Well apparently, the two zombie women I encountered were working in the Tao restaurant, and when we walked past, all the workers were made up in a GHASTLY manner.  I have nothing against Halloween, but I do think the restaurant should have rethought its Halloween promotional do beforehand, given that it’s a family restaurant and all.

My kid is still telling me that the AUNTIES in the toilet looked SO SCARY.

So there’s a thing called a Halloween celebration and also a SCARE-a-bration.  And there’s a mighty fine line between the two.
