Yes, the Giddy Tigress can Cook!

After so many weeks of desperately hoping and praying for homecooked food, my hubby and little boy finally had their prayers answered! Goodbye excuses of “no time” and “too lazy”, last Sunday saw me in the kitchen, giddily cooking up a meal. My parents came for a visit all the way from Ipoh, so they had the rare opportunity to sample the result of my culinary adventure.

The chicken rice was actually *tipu* claypot chicken rice, because I used the rice cooker. Heh heh heh…. And it was the first time my Mom (the claypot chicken rice sifu from whom I learnt the art from) actually tried it. …. Pressure, pressure…..

The secret of course is in the marinade, and I used light soy sauce, pepper, black soy sauce, some sesame seed oil and some oyster sauce to marinade the chicken pieces. I added some pieces of chicken gizzard too – absolutely love the crunchiness of it! I left it to marinade before I went for church in the morning and when I came back, it was all ready to be cooked!

First I fried the shallots, garlic and ginger slices until fragrant. I put in a lot of ginger slices because my hubby and I simply love the taste of it. Then I added the marinated chicken, sliced toong-ku (shiitake mushrooms) and lap cheong (chinese sausage).

Next, I added in the washed rice and stir fried for a few minutes. I then transferred the mixture into a rice cooker, added enough water to cook the rice and poured in generous pieces of kiam-hoo-bak (salted fish meat) right on top before I hit the Cook Rice button. I served it hot, garnished with spring onions and of course, lat-chew-chai aka cili padi (bird’s eye chilli).

Although I had cooked the chicken rice many many times before, it was my first attempt with the kerabu. I normally serve my chicken rice with just cucumber slices, but I was feeling adventurous this time round, so I thought of trying to make a simple version of the kerabu, a favorite appetizer among all Malaysians. The previous night, we bought a small pineapple and I attempted to cut it (first time too!). The kerabu was fairly easy to make and it was a matter of mixing everything up. I simply stirred in the pineapple, cucumber slices, cili padi (bird’s eye chilli) and sliced shallots…oh yeah, for a hint of aroma, I added finely chopped mint leaves too. I then squeezed the juice of a medium-sized lime onto it and mixed up the concoction real good. Then I left it to chill for about an hour in the fridge. That will allow the juices to permeate and give it the right taste.

I don’t know if sleep-induced meals are an indication of a meal well-cooked, but I made the meal for lunch and it left everyone so full, we all fell asleep after that. 🙂

Sotong Blur is as Sotong Gets

Lately I have the weirdest feeling that I am getting blurrer and blurrer…I might as well have the sign “D’oh!” fixed to my head.  You tell me if I am hallucinating…

I blogged that I was a Liverpudlian, but my hubby promptly reminded me that I should be referred to a s Kopite.  So I had to add a clarification to the end of that post.

I blogged that I had never before tasted the pancake dessert when I had attended weddings in Penang, but my loyal blog reader aka my hubby told me that he had been to weddings in Penang with me and we had tasted it before.  For the life of me, I can’t remember doing so.  I can only remember the cold honeydew sago dessert.

This morning I went to the vending machine to get a drink of hot Milo.  I put in a 50 cent coin followed by a 10 cent coin, but that machine swallowed my money!  I banged and banged the machine in my most feminine manner possible but the machine simply would not regurgitate the coins.  I should have waited to see if the 50 cent coin could be detected before continuing with the 10 cent coin….then again, I should have put the 10 cent coin in first. *shrugs*

My hubby and I went back home just now for lunch, and as we were about to leave the house, I took a paper bag I had wanted to throw away, walked outside and *patiently* waited for my hubby to lock the door.  As he was locking the grille door, he looked at the paper bag and asked me what that was for.  I told him I wanted to throw it away (the waste collection room was just right outside our apartment).  My hubby paused for effect 😛  And I sheepishly went to throw it away.

But although I self-profess that I am blur, I am not one to make empty promises.  So I am living up to my word and affirming my participation in MY List by providing here the list of all the blogs who are also in the same geng:

Star Gazer Wannabe

Astronomy was never really my cup of tea.  In fact, the closest I got to this field was way back when I was a little girl.  I remember that at that time, I had to wake up real early and by 7:00a.m. I was already outside my house, waiting for the school bus.  Well, boredom makes people do things they ordinarily wouldn’t do.  I would frequently cast my gaze skywards trying to catch a glimpse of the planet Venus, Haley’s Comet or that elusive shooting star.  I suppose if I had owned one of these meade my sky gadgets, I might have taken this interest of astronomy and star-gazing a step or two further.  It looks really cool because with just a point-and-shoot function, I can capture awesome pictures of the galaxy.  It looks simple enough to use, and is definitely a great gadget for a not-so-technical person like me.

Unmetered…if there’s a word like that

I am appalled to note that taxi drivers in Penang still do not use the meter. Despite the launch of metered taxis sometime last year, this ruling has not been enforced at all and the authorities (or whatever it is they are called these days) have fallen prey to the strikes that the taxi drivers have held against this implementation. Last Monday, when my hubby and I wanted to take a cab to go to Gurney Plaza from Komtar, we stood at the designated taxi stand and hailed down a cab. The taxi driver told us it would cost RM12. What??!! 12 freakin’ ringgit just for a 10-minute drive, traffic-jam-free? That was way too much. So we walked a little further down the road to another taxi stand, where all the taxi drivers were lepaking. We could not believe it when they told us it was gonna cost RM15. Another group of taxi drivers around the corner quoted us RM15 too, but was willing to go down to (what he claimed was his lowest offer) RM12. So we were back at square one. We reluctantly paid the twelve bucks, and headed to Gurney Plaza, convinced that we were definitely being overcharged. Why is it that taxis in the Klang Valley are cooperative and obedient enough to use the meters but not Penang taxis? Are Penang taxi drivers truly living up to their reputation of being kiam-siap(stingy)? Is it so hard for the authorities to clamp down on these taxi drivers? I bet they would charge a tourist way much more than RM12, that’s for sure. With Penang being a certain tourist destination this Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the non-usage of metered taxis is definitely a bane rather than a boon for the industry. And it saddens me that nobody is doing anything about it.

Painting with Words

Are you blogging using Blogspot because it is free?  And do you keep using it because you think it is the only free blogging platform that offers the opportunity to make money via advertisements and paid posts?  Do you kick yourself silly with all the Blogspot quirks like the inability to publish your posts or frequent problems where your commentors are unable to comment?  I should know, I was formerly using Blogspot too…  Do you wish you could experience the effectiveness of WordPress for free but not be bogged down by the ruling that you are not allowed adverts and paid posts on your blog?

Well, guess what…I recently found out about a great blogging platform that has the functionalities and feel of WordPress, but allows advertisements and paid posts!  I kid you not… And yes, it is FREE!  Called Rainbow of Words, it is both simple to use and elegant.  When a friend of mine recently wanted to start blogging, his first choice of a blogging platform forced me to register when I wanted to drop a comment, so I gave him the thumbs down – nobody wants the extra hassle of registering just to say a few words.  So he scouted around for another platform and found Rainbow of Words.  It is functional does its job to the tee.  What more could a blogger ask for?
