How I Uncracked the Crack “Under Pressure”

A few days before my daughter’s birthday do, I started making the Dora figurine for her cake.  I used fondant, and when I searched the internet, there weren’t too many samples to refer to.  Most of the Dora cakes used a plastic Dora figurine plonked on top of the cake or a 2-D design with Dora’s picture flat on the cake.  So the only thing I used for reference was a little Dora soft toy.

My plan was to finish the figurine before picking the kids up, however I had underestimated the time I would need to roll out the fondant to the shade of Dora’s skin.  That took me a while, and before I knew it I had to abandon my project midway, with a faceless and hairless Dora:

Unfortunately, I forgot the rules for storing fondant figurines in advance.  I left the little Dora-wannabe out in the open, supposedly to “air-dry” and when I went back to work on it later that night, I found cracks all over the little poor thing!

Apparently, Dora had cracked under pressure…SIGH.

Instinctively, I used some water to try to cover up the cracks, but when it dried it became worse.  A quick search in the internet revealed that water was NOT to be used to cover up cracks in fondant, in fact I should have used vegetable shortening!!  Immediately I tried some shortening on the cracked area and they “healed” almost instantly.

Alas, it was too late to save the whole figurine and I decided to redo the figurine the next day.

This time I was careful to place little Dora in a covered container with a little bit of air for ventilation.

Airtight containers aren’t recommended because condensation might form when the cover is opened, so I used clingwrap film on top of the container and punched a few tiny holes at the top.  Whenever I could I would put the container in an air-conditioned environment, and yes, the container slept in the same room with us at night 🙂  Our air-conditioner is not on the whole night, but might as well make full use of it while we can! 🙂

Hannah had also wanted Boots, so I made a small Boots figurine too.

The night before the party, I hand painted the facial features with food coloring.  On hindsight, I should have used white fondant for the eyes, but I was pressed for time.

Mine was actually a chubbier version of Dora, and even though I placed the figurine on the cake using a few sticks of uncooked spaghetti, it looked like it was leaning farther and farther back, so I had to prop Dora up with a “fondant mountain”. LOL

I’m pretty pleased with the cake, but I need to do some research on how to craft slimmer figurines in future! hahaha….

Most importantly, I had a blast creating this cake…I just might make it an annual affair now, since I’ve already done it 2 years in a row! 🙂

What Once I Thought Was Lost, But Now Is Found…

I’ve had my fair of share of lost-and-founds.  The feeling of helplessness and devastation of something lost culminating in a full-fledged search and ending either in the joy of finding the missing item or the sheer despair of it being lost forever is not new to me…well, I’d like to think there are little pixies following me around, and hiding things when they feel like it, just because they like to, but that explanation is a little too far-fetched… 🙂

Two weeks ago, I discovered, to my dismay, that my trusty point-and-shoot Canon camera (pictured above) was missing.  I carry it all the time in my bag and coincidentally, on that day, I wanted to use it but could not find it.  I searched in all the usual (and unusual) places, and lamented in all the usual places too…Twitter, Facebook…you name it.

I even called my parents and parents-in-law in Ipoh and Taiping to help look, because I definitely brought it along with me during the Chinese New Year break.

The last time I remember using it was on CNY eve when I had downloaded some photos into my laptop.  I was using the camera and laptop in the room in Taiping and because it was late at night at that time, I had an inkling that I might have dropped it somewhere in the room.  Also, I didn’t remember using it at all after that.

My MIL helped me look in the room, under the bed, and even all around the house, but each time, she would report to tell me it could not be found.  Apparently my SIL had also cleaned out the room, including changing the bedsheets but she did not recall finding anything too.

My parents could not find it in Ipoh as well.  Hope was running out, and I was beginning to believe that I might have accidentally dropped it in some restaurant or mall…!!

I searched every nook and cranny in my apartment in Penang, but nothing was found.  Every time I go to a restaurant or store which I had gone to since I came back from CNY, I would ask the people working there if they had found a camera.  But each time, they shook their heads and told me no.  Old Town, Fatty Loh Chicken Rice, Popular bookstore, Daiso, the kids’ school, everywhere..

Hubby had also thought that I might have accidentally THROWN it away in the trash!!!  Gawsh.

But…as you can see from the title, I DID finally find it….but where?

So…Saint George and Princess Sabra: They Go Together eh?

Oh yeah baby…I received a small parcel from the UK yesterday and I knew what it was right away: My nail lacquers from a-england!

I don’t think I have ever used Green nail lacquer on my nails before, let alone own such a shade, but Saint George was too gorgeous to overlook.  I can’t take my eyes away from the holographic colors and what I like most is that it dries super-quick!  It’s not exactly green though, it’s like a bluish-teal shade which is so unique!!

As others would have already said, this range of nail lacquers from a-england is one of the best ever.  Smooth as butter and completely idiot-proof…even a lousy manicurist like me can use it.  I don’t know about you, but I’m always having problems painting my right fingernails, simply because I’m a rightie.  I only used ONE layer and it was rich enough for me.

Now I wasn’t gonna paint my toenails the same color, was I?  I decided to go with Princess Sabra, an olive shade of gold.  It’s very understated and elegant at the same time.  And I love how it complements my FitFlops too!

Plus, I can’t get over how these two gorgeous shades go with each other!  I’m gonna switch them around in a few days…

Vampy enough? 🙂

Now how am I gonna stop myself from getting the entire collection?

Do They Know They Will Be Replaced?

Have you ever encountered a situation where something you have owned for a long time suddenly breaks or stops working or goes wonky, right before you get something else to replace it?

Happened to me several times, I am beginning to feel it’s not even coincidental anymore…

Like when my trusty old Nokia phone decides it’s time to quit charging its battery a few days before my iPhone came along…Or the strap of a bag breaks right before I change to a new bag…Or my hair starts looking all lustrous and shiny just before a haircut…

Okay, well maybe not the last one…but I always experience that.

fitflops1

Lately it happened to me again.  My faithful pair of FitFlops of 3 years suddenly gave way 2 days before Chinese New Year, which was when I had decided to break in my new FitFlops.

Coincidence?  I think not…

Another One about The Brazilian

not pictured on this menu: Brazilian waxes, $45

There are three factors which determine a successful and fulfilling Brazilian Wax, for me, at least.

  • First, it has to be PAIN-FREE.  Or if that is unattainable, the pain has to be minimal or negligible.
  • Secondly, the entire process should be over and done with in as little time as possible.  Let’s face it, nobody likes to lie down that way for such a long time
  • Lastly, the Brazilian Wax has got to be thorough.  No stray hairs and unwanted wax sticking around.

Just last week, I utilized my recently-purchased Groupon for a Brazilian Wax at a center called Cellnex here in Penang.  It’s a big red-painted building just opposite the Parkson entrance at Gurney Plaza, on Kelawai Rd.

Perhaps it was the lure that the session was just about a third of the price I’d normally pay for my usual Brazilian, but I had high hopes it was going to be a good one (plus I got to save some money).

Alas, it was not to be. 🙁  In the first place, I was asked to wait for a good 15 minutes or so because apparently the wax had not heated up enough yet.  To me, if the appointment is at 10:30a.m. they should have made sure everything was good to go at 10:30a.m. sharp.  To make matters worse, the room was very “clinical” looking.  No sign of aromatherapy oils or soothing music.

Tension was in the air.  Not good, I thought…

torturechamber

Well, I knew they were using hard wax, but I had no idea that there were no waxing strips used.  The wax was just pulled off the skin and … OUCH!!!!   I had never known hurt so bad in my life, believe me.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, she had to use the tweezers too, because the wax was not very effective in doing its job.  That was the LONGEST Brazilian I had ever had.  I kept wondering when it would be over, because it just kept dragging on and on.  I tried to keep my mind away from the pain but I just couldn’t relax enough to do so.  Yeah, did I mention no music?  Just the sound of wax ripping the layer of my skin off.  Okay, it really sounded like that.

I even found out that this center does “double-dipping” – truly a No-No for Brazilian waxes.  I suspected this when I saw her using the same stick over and over again, so I asked.

Me: So..for your hard wax…if there are no more customers after this, it will just cool down, right?
Therapist: Yes.
Me: And what do you do when another customer needs to use it?
Therapist: Oh we just heat it up again LOR. (she answered this matter-of-factly)

Ewwww.

When all was said and done, and I was getting dressed, I noticed, to my ickiness, that the entire floor was covered in pieces of HAIR!  So unsightly!

The last straw was when I discovered the Brazilian wasn’t even thorough!  But if you thought I was gonna ask them to rectify that…no thank you…I’m just not going back there ever again!

Sigh…another case of penny wise pound foolish…? :(… or rather, PAINFUL-ish!!!
